He is not here. He is Risen.

No secrets. The tomb is open. No fear. Death is done. Just caught up with Kelsey. She keeps me accountable by just being who she is. She told me the lump on her breast has grown. She has to have a mastectomy. She’s 22. We are 22. Barely adults.

God convicts me to be real. Hide nothing. His calling is real. I need to be honest. He calls us out of our tombs and out in the world. Be His hands and feet. Jesus clothed in white, rose from the tomb. And now I see Him barefoot, walking on a dirt road, towards the sun. Mary Magdalene behind Him. And I must leave my tomb and follow.

"Old but I’m not that old. Young but I’m not that bold."

Take a step out. Stop worrying about the past. I am radically changed by the Son. And I’ll go with Him. I will never be any younger than I am now. And my calling isn’t crazy because it rings for only me. Answer it. Follow the transition. Love all. Make time for those that matter. Simplify, unify, go. Go. Live in faith. Do. Life.

Overlapping health system just helps to ‘jump queue’

By INGA TING

Sam Taylor’s children were just 6 and 14 when she was asked to make a choice no woman ever wants to make.

Diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer in May last year, Taylor tested positive for the BRCA1 gene mutation that greatly increases the lifetime risk of developing cancer.

Doctors said she had two options: wait up to three years in the public system for the double mastectomy that might save her life or spend thousands of dollars going through private insurance.

No time to lose: Sam Taylor (pictured with her daughter Jade) decided to go through private insurance for after being told she could wait up to three years to have a double mastectomy in the public system. Photo: Ben Rushton

After going through six months of chemotherapy and with a husband and two young children to consider, it was “a no-brainer”, Taylor says.

"You’re told it could be back within five [years]; I don’t have three years to wait." The 41-year-old had a double mastectomy and breast reconstruction in February.

The procedure, free under Medicare, cost nearly $15,000.

Private insurance covered less than $3600 but there was no wait, Taylor says.

"We’re selling our house at the end of the year because the bills are just piling up … I’m really lucky my husband has a great job and we had extra equity in the house," Taylor said.

"If Scott and I had this diagnosis 20 years ago I would have been on the waiting list. I would have had no option."

It’s an option many more Australians may wish they had. Hospital waiting times are growing longer because Australia’s “two-tier” health system is pushing resources from the public to the private system, experts say.

Hospital waiting times are growing longer because Australia’s “two-tier” health system is pushing resources from the public to the private system, experts say.

Nearly 90 per cent of private health insurance coverage here duplicates public services, meaning private patients get the same treatment but faster access, an international analysis has shown.

Health economists say waiting times for people without private insurance will worsen if nothing is done to address the large overlap between the public and private systems, and suggest the private system should instead be harnessed to help those most in need of care.

Private insurance, public resources

Duplication was intended to cut queues in the public health sector by creating a parallel system for wealthier Australians with private health cover. But instead it has led to doctors abandoning the public system for the better-resourced private market, and given private patients priority access to public facilities.”

I'm discovering a love of tattoos in the second half of my life

Sometimes I suspect that this is the only logical career path for someone who’s studied anthropology, comparative religion, symbolism, art, health care, and graphic design, who has an interest in working with the public and being part of people’s life passages. Or at least it’s a reasonably good back-up plan.

Some tattoo artists also do medical art (such as tattooing a realistic nipple onto someone who has had breast reconstruction, or designs over a mastectomy scar, etc) - having a “clean”/somewhat mainstream middle class image (i.e., no tattoos on the face, no piercings, etc - I don’t seem terribly “hipster”, edgy, or “street”) would actually be helpful for reaching those clients.

I’ve gotten into designing tattoos for friends recently, and for myself, and it would be interesting to learn how to actually put them on skin.

Please do some of old and young and in-between-age folk!

Right now, just because I’m using it mainly to discuss gender with little kids we’re making them prepubescent younger children. Once I finish with this and see how it all works with the younger kids and pre-teens I’m going to make a “puberty expansion pack” to help talk about the changes bodies go through during puberty. After I do that, I’ll try to do some more diverse ages. It’s going to be a pretty expansive project.

I’m going to be talking to my co-trainer about using this in our general OWL curriculum and we may want to use it as a visual aid to tell stories so I may make other aged dolls for that (and of course I will share them and keep in mind some of the suggestions I’ve gotten for older dolls like mastectomies and different weight distribution.

How many surgeries have you got on your boobs? You have a lot of scars :( stay strong hunnie!

One partial mastectomy (medical term - Lumpectomy). On me considered a partial mastectomy due to how much was taken out. The other marks are stretch marks, pretty fresh if you can tell by the purple due to the rapid growth of the tumors in my breasts. I’m currently awaiting a bi-lateral mastectomy with hopeful reconstruction (I’m not taking one doctor’s opinion and going with it saying I’m not a good candidate for reconstruction, I deserve reconstruction and it’s the law as a mastectomy patient). Thank you, I will stay strong and positive!!
