I actually do feel what Mark is saying now and then. When I started blogging (back in 2006), my ultimate goal was to lure some people to read my blog and start becoming famous. Before, all I had to talk about was school stuff and boys. Eventually, I became a Christian and I started writing about God and Christianity – but all with the wrong motives. I still had that desire to become famous; I wanted everyone to read my blog and praise me about it.
When I got to college, I realized that God gave me a desire for writing and making typography so that a lot of people will know more about Him, not about me. A lot of my friends also started telling me that I should use this for God’s purpose. I recently “deactivated” my old Tumblr account and created a new one. And yes, even though I am more aware of the duty that I have right now, it is always a given fact that pride will always get to us. The desire to become famous will get to us. We would want to gain more followers. And most of the time, I do say to myself, “I want to be famous because I want more people to know God.” But the reality is, we want people to know that we know God, we take so much pride that we are Christians but we forget that as followers of Christ, we have a certain duty to do. Let me give you a quote from Max Lucado’s book, It’s Not About Me:
“Lesser orbs, that’s us. Appreciated. Valued. Loved dearly. But central? Essential? Pivotal? Nope. Sorry. Contrary to the Ptolemy within us, the world doesn't revolve around us. Our comfort is not God’s priority. If it is, something’s gone awry. If we are the marquee event, how do we explain flat-earth challenges like death, disease, slumping economies, or rumbling earthquakes? If God exists to please us, then shouldn't we always be pleased?
Could a Copernican shift be in order? Perhaps our place is not the center of the universe. God does not exist to make a big deal out of us. We exist to make a deal out of him. It’s not about you. It’s not about me. It’s all about him.
The moon models our role.
What does the moon do? She generates no light. Contrary to the lyrics of the song, this harvest moon cannot shine on. Apart from the sun, the moon is nothing more than a pitch-black, pockmarked rock. But properly positioned, the moon beams. Let her do what she was made to do, and a clod of dirt becomes a source of inspiration, yea, verily, romance. The moon reflects the greater light.
And she’s happy to do so! You never hear the moon complaining. She makes no waves about making waves. Let the cow jump over her or astronauts step on her; she never objects. Even though sunning is accepted while mooning is the butt of bad jokes, you won’t hear ol’ Cheeseface grumble. The moon is at peace in her place. And because she is, soft light touches a dark earth.
What would happen if we accepted our place as Son reflectors?”
I just want to share that we are “nothing more than (a) pitch-black, pockmarked rock(s)”. But I know that God gave us different gifts for us to shine God’s light to other people. We are placed here on Earth for a purpose, and that is to glorify God.
Let us continually check our hearts if there is pride in it. Let us ask God to help us remove pride in our lives. Tumblr can really be a good medium in serving God if we will it to be. Let us remember, we are serving God – not other people, not even ourselves.
So to all Christian bloggers out there, I ask of you to pray with utmost earnestness for God to use us, use you, in the most mundane things and activities. Let us always remember that how we live our life is an act of worship to God. Let us glorify God in all our ways – on how we treat our families, how we respect our boss or colleagues, how we fare in our studies, how we write on our blogs, even with our eating habits or exercise regimens – I can go on and on and on! I know it isn’t an accident that you read this or the original post. Let me share to you Philippians 2:1-11 (NIV) which tells us about how we should walk our lives:
1 If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. 4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.
5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:
6 Who, being in very naturea God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,
7 but made himself nothing, taking the very natureb of a servant, being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death— even death on a cross!
9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Let God be glorified in our lives. Have a wonderful day, beloved! :)
