Look Up From Your Phone

Look Up‘ is a spoken word film for an online generation. It’s a lesson taught to us through a love story, in a world where we continue to find ways to make it easier for us to connect with one another, but always results in us spending more time alone.

Written, Performed and Directed by Gary Turk
Also featuring Louise Ludlam and Stuart Darnley
Original score by New Desert Blues
Sound engineering by Daniel Cobb
Filmed and edited by Gary Turk

Day 5 #Fierce. Even though some days I don’t exactly feel fierce, I always do my best to pick up my head and try to take on the day in the best way possible. When you look up to the sky in a pose, I like to think of it as you’re telling the universe you’re ready to take on whatever it brings.

"hey i have an idea, let’s use our technology to film a video about how shitty technology and social media are, then upload it to the internet via some more technology, and share it all over every viable social media we can think of, and get heaps of views and likes! it’ll totally go viral! technology is so lame! let’s only have white actors! and make introverts and people with mental illnesses feel like failures because they enjoy socializing over the internet!"

Wow…this is a must watch video. I’ve found myself guilty of this on more than one occasion and I’m starting to step back. Spending time with others face-to-face outside…enjoying the great big world that existed before cell phones and laptops and computer games. Focusing attention on the people who mean more than some artificial intelligence.

As the narrator says, “We’re a generation of idiots: smart phones and dumb people.”
