Yesterday my 9 year old and I were going through J-14 for a school assignment of hers (seriously) and she insisted on listing One Direction in order of preference and after lengthy consideration came out with

  1. Niall
  2. Zayn
  3. "before it was [Liam], but now with that hair he’s so bad," so: Harry
  4. Liam
  5. Louis

her other thoughts on the matter included “why do they all have ugly tattoos?” and “did [Louis] quit? because he’s playing soccer in these pictures”

Facts about Canadian money:

  • it has holograms!
  • it has clear segments
  • it’s made of plastic so even if you try and rip it you can’t
  • at the $100 level it’s got a LADY SCIENTIST on it
  • $5 bills have hockey players and a literary quotation about hockey but I don’t have one right now
  • also this is a terrible isolated example because all the other denominations are beautiful colors, fuck this tan shit

I remember talking a bunch of shit last night but not specifically what about, which is probably good because the things I do remember are

a) arguing at intense length with a boy I had never met about 1D in a way that somehow involved a musicological review of Brill Building girl groups but not realizing that the obvious implicit Joey Ramone connection there needed to be made out loud and getting into a hopeless muddle,

b) responding to LR’s query about Dinosaur Jr by exclaiming loudly about Marc Bolan before realizing what I had done, and

c) was going to be “would not shut up about Loretta Lynn” but actually nothing about that was regrettable

Assorted Thoughts: a Sunday Morning List in Seven Parts
  1. R has probably convinced me to read A Song of Ice and Fire so I guess that’s gonna happen soon

  4. The first chunk of a poem is sitting in my Great Books notebook and I feel silly about it
  5. This peach jam that I impulse-bought at Adonis is really fucking good
  6. It’s not that I don’t feel at all gross but feeling gross is Different in the summer than in the winter because there is warmth and light all around you
  7. Shit, the kettle has been boiling for a while now hasn’t it

Today in “[badfuckingpuns] gets homesick for the weirdest things”:

  • getting on the D line to work from B’s hungover at 8am surrounded by competent businesspeople and health care professionals
  • wandering through downtown during Christmas in the Square and buying oversized candy canes from the HHS wrestling boosters before getting drunk in the graveyard
  • the Mattapan Trolley
AS PROMISED:

a List of Specific, Tangible, Coherent New Years Resolutions

  1. I want to have the big pile of sewing and other art/craft supplies out of the entryway by the end of January, and the rest of the closet and front room piles organized and straightened out by the spring thaw. I don’t think I even need to get rid of all that much stuff—but I need to put some sort of coherent system together so I can find and make use of it.
  2. I want to cut down on, and try to stop, interrupting people in conversation and answering questions meant for/concerning others. These are my two most disrespectful conversational habits and I’m totally out of control of both of them to my extreme detriment.
  3. I want to learn how to style and care for my hair better. I want to find a haircut that works for me, work the dead bleached length out (maybe gradually, maybe by chopping it off, who knows), and figure out effective ways to style it and to treat it to keep it healthy and less bedraggled.
  4. I want to make at least three tangible things this year—be they art, research, clothes, gifts, housewares—that I am genuinely properly proud of, and talk about them with more pride than deprecation.
  5. This is the one I’m feeling weirdest about a) making and b) announcing, but: I want to lose weight. Properly. Ideally somewhere around 25 pounds, but we’ll see. Not “get fit,” not “eat healthy,” lose weight. I’ve been ineffectually grappling with this for a while now, half-trying on and off, feeling conflicted about wanting it and shitty about not being able to, and I think I should at least let myself genuinely and seriously try.

Important Transnational Experiences, 8/17/14:
  1. someone Instagrammed themselves eating a cherry dip cone from DQ and I was devastatingly reminded that there is no cherry dip in Canada;
  2. I was in the SAQ and they were selling fourpacks of blue WKD for $12 and change (that’s…more than $3 per bottle, guys), the packages said “IMPORTED” in big capitals that seemed to think this Implied Something Significant, and I couldn’t stop laughing to myself while trying to pick wine

Boy wound up staying over, so the whole “make up for its being Wednesday by staying up and working after he leaves” plan sort’ve fell through, and then I fell back asleep for a couple hours after he left because my body’s internal clock is an idiot

but like, I had a nice time and there are still four or five hours until I’m totally screwed academically today

(sidenote: is it an issue that I have a separate “By Which Time I Have Failed Unequivocally” countdown basically every single weekday of my life?)

Otherwise things are basically as follows:

  • Bedroom status: clean, because I panic-tidied yesterday
  • Hairnest status: jumbly
  • Homework status: several hours behind
  • Caffeination status: getting there
  • Mood status: great
1. what’s your favorite poem?

I do not know the answer to this question because there is no answer to this question becuase what is a “favorite,” what is a “poem,” what is an answer to a question of preference when it’s getting written down and someone might read it like 20 seconds from now when it’s not true anymore, but like, LR and I both almost cried in the bar the other night about “Homestead” by Eireann Corrigan (http://lovelykday.wordpress.com/tag/eireann-corrigan/) so maybe that’s the most recent qualifier even though it’s not even the poem I like best from that book
