Do you think someone has to listen to goth music to be goth? I consider myself goth and dress and look a very gothy way, but the only goth band I listen to is The Cure, and I don't even listen to them very much. I know This Is Not Goth believes that someone must listen to goth music in order to be goth. I'd like to know your opinion.

Now, I want to make something very clear.  No matter what I say, people are going to do and be what they want, okay?  Remember, I’m not being the expert here, merely offering my opinions and experience.

That being said—yes, I feel that you do need to listen to *some* goth music in order to “be a goth”.  Now, hear me out, okay?  The reason I think this is two-fold.

The first is that the whole goth subgenre started with the music.  It’s intrinsic to the scene—no matter where the scene is now, or how many branches the tree might currently have.  You can’t have goth without the music; it’s part and parcel of the whole.

The second is more of a personal opinion.  I honestly think that if you’re into the aesthetics of the goth scene, the music itself is just going to come naturally.

IMPORTANT POINT:  JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE GOTH DOES NOT MEAN YOU HAVE TO LISTEN TO GOTH MUSIC ALL THE DAMN DAY.

I listen to all kinds of music—seriously—and goth music is just part of that.  But it *is* a part.

So.  Does that answer your question, even a little bit?  I hope so. =)
