Come On, Feel The Illinoise! is my favourite Sufjan Stevens album. As a Decemberists fan, I very frequently heard fellow fans talk about Pitchfork Media. Their top reviewed albums of 2009 were Animal Collective’s Merriweather Post Pavilion (Booooring) and, of course, Illinoise. I downloaded both illegally.
On August 1 2009, “I made a lot of mistakes”. Rhyannon, Henry and I went camping and we had a fairly hellish - but overall, terrific - night. In the morning, I woke up at five or six AM. I put Chicago on, and I ran, and I ran. I then went to the top of the hill and sang along with The Crane Wife 3 by the Decemberists.
Every time I listen to almost any song on this album, I think about Rhyannon, as there’s always some anecdote that she and I share which relates to it. That passage I quoted at the start - I drove to New York, in a van, with my friend - serves as an excellent summary of our entire friendship.
I bought Illinoise on CD in early 2010. It’s on the prettiest disc I’ve ever owned.
