More Than This by Jay McLean

This is the first book in a series written by author, Jay McLean. It follows the relationship between teenagers, Mikayla Jones and Jake Andrews. This book takes its readers on a journey of finding a way to look beyond the hardships that life throws at you.

This book has the best opening scene I have probably ever read. Micky’s parents come into her room and tell her that they have something really important to tell her. Mikayla begins to think the worst, she must be adopted. What else would they need to tell her? Well, it definitely wasn’t that she was adopted. Go check out the book to find out what had me rolling on the floor laughing. You won’t be disappointed.

Now, even though this book was pretty hilarious, it was also heartbreaking and gut wrenchingly sad. Make sure you have a box of tissues with you for the first like hundred pages. Okay, maybe more like the whole book because you’ll also need the tissues to wipe your tears from laughing, too.

Mikayla has to go through something that no one should ever have to go through and it changes her laugh completely. She has know idea where to go, or what to do. She has to make hard decisions and face her demons as well.

Jake Andrews is everything you want from a male lead. He’s got a hot body, a hypnotizing accent and he wears a baseball uniform. Enough said. To top it all off, he’s super sweet and kind and loving and amazing. Did I mention he was amazing? Well, he is.

Jake and Kayla’s relationship starts off on a weird note. Jake meets Mikayla at an Italian restaurant on Prom night. Please not that they had never met before this point. They meet when Jake’s best friend, Logan (I will be reviewing his book in a future post), spills his drink on Mikayla’s back when he’s trying to get her attention. After some words are thrown back and forth Mikayla goes to the restroom to freshen up. Little did she know, her boyfriend and her best friend would be coming out of the bathroom together. As in the same restroom looking a little disheveled. Okay, more like a lot disheveled. There’s an altercation between them, and it just so happens that Jake witnesses the whole event. He feels bad for Kayla, so he invites her to join him and his friends and be his date to his prom. Kayla agrees and the fun begins. If you have read the book, then you know exactly what I mean by fun. (ahem…Operation Mayhem). :) ;)

After a night of fun with some new friends, Mikayla’s life changes in a major way. She has to learn to deal with losing what is most important to her. Fortunately, she has Jake to lean on. He helps her deal with everything that happened that night and then some. He teaches her how to love again. He’s her light in the darkness that threatens to consume her. He’s her rock and her shoulder to cry on throughout her coping. He’s her everything. And that’s all within the first month of them knowing each other.

Jake and Mikayla have their ups and downs, but through it all they find out that they “more than a lot love” each other.

This book is being republished, so you will be able to buy, and not preorder on January 28, 2015. The Kindle ebook version, I believe, is available for purchase, or free with Kindle Unlimited subscription.
