Seventeenth Cadence (detail). Here is the original drawing and then the final painting.

This work was always meant to be more of a drawing than a painting. Even in the completed version, I have allowed many of the original linear elements to remain. Big drawings are fun to make. I enjoy all of the messy lines that interrupt any attempt at a refined “completed” work in this painting.

I’ve decided to revisit “Mfon Abasi,” the fattened bride who is cast as “Mary” in the Annunciation triptych I started a couple of years back. She is looking at Gabriel (who will appear on another canvas) as she is transforming into various musical instruments. But this drawing/ painting is about to undergo some major reconstructive surgery. Just wait until you see what Gabriel is going to look like!
