Wait for Sleep by Dream Theater [Images and Words (1992)]

A few days ago I said that this album makes me happy: It is one of my favourite Dream Theater albums, and this song caught my particular attention the first time I listened to this album as a whole.

On the first hand, because when you go from listening to the strong drum beats and progressive riffs of a song like Under a glass moon, with its incredible guitar solo and sharp vocals, to a gentle piano melody followed by more tender vocals, your attention has to be caught. On the other hand, because it consists only on piano and vocals (in contrast with the previous songs), the lyrics are full of images that are strangely familiar (to me at least), and the melody is so captivating that it definitely pulls you in and doesn’t let you go.

Standing by the window
Eyes upon the moon
Hoping that the memory will leave her spirit soon

She shuts the doors and lights
And lays her body on the bed
Where images and words are running deep
She has too much pride to pull the sheets above her head
So quietly she lays and waits for sleep

She stares at the ceiling
And tries not to think
And pictures the chain
She’s been trying to link again
But the feeling is gone

And water can’t cover her memory
And ashes can’t answer her pain
God give me the power to take breath from a breeze
And call life from a cold metal frame

In with the ashes
Or up with the smoke from the fire
With wings up in heaven
Or here, lying in bed
Palm of her hand to my head
Now and forever curled in my heart
And the heart of the world

It almost feels like a whisper, this song. No, more like a gentle kiss, a gentle goodbye kiss.

Twilight by Antony and The Johnsons [Antony and The Johnsons (1998)]

This is the first track of the first album studio by Antony and the Johnsons. All the lyrics were written by amazing composer, singer and visual artist Antony Hegarty.

I fall in the Harbor
I fall in the hills
But here in the city
That never sleeps
I can fall
Through one’s fingers

When you get to listen to this album as a whole for the first time, if you are not overwhelmed by the feeling of this song, then there’s something wrong with you. Nah, I keed you, but seriously this song is just a bite to taste the wonderfulness of this album.

I sit at all tables
With my candles
And angels besides
And I shall wait forever
As the day turns to night
Swallowed in the shadows that glow

It’s the whole composition of it: the lyrics, the voice, the piano, the orchestra; fierce violins and sweet horns and clarinet, slamming the chords into eachother out of pure melancholy.

This song is pure build up, and I love it.

For today I am a bouy by Antony and the Johnsons [I am a bird now (2005)]

One day I’ll grow up, I’ll be a beautiful woman
One day I’ll grow up, I’ll be a beautiful girl
One day I’ll grow up, I’ll be a beautiful woman
One day I’ll grow up, I’ll be a beautiful girl

But for today I am a child, for today I am a boy
For today I am a child, for today I am a boy
For today I am a child, for today I am a boy

Hope there’s someone by Antony and the Johnsons [I am a Bird now (2005)]

I love Antony’s voice, affected in the perfect dose.

There’s a ghost on the horizon
When I go to bed
How can I fall asleep at night
How will I rest my head

Oh I’m scared of the middle place
Between light and nowhere
I don’t want to be the one
Left in there, left in there

I think this song goes to my “To listen when I’m sad” song list.

Dreamflight by After Forever [After Forever (2007)]

Welcome, and wake up!
This is not a dream but something between that and reality
Wake up if you dare!
This is not the regular nightmare!

This seems to be the longest song ever composed by this band and it belongs to the last album they released before disbanding in 2009.

Dreamflight travels you through the world of dreams and nightmares constantly confronting reality. I personally love this song because of the orchestral work that blends so well with the gothic and symphonic metal elements that characterized this band’s sound.

Before your eyes the world will change
Slowly take you down to unknown places
Welcome to a world that’s only yours
Wake up if you dare and just follow me!

I know it’s Over by The Smiths [The Queen is Dead (1986)]

Oh Mother! I can feel the soil falling over my head.

We all have that one band or that one song that we always listen to when we are feeling sad, or am I the only one? The Smiths and I know it’s Over are that band and that song for me.

If you’re so funny then why are you on your own tonight?

And if you’re so clever then why are you on your own tonight?

If you’re so very entertaining then why are you on your own tonight?

If you’re so very good-looking, why do you sleep alone tonight?

It might sound as some form of emotional masochism to listen to this song exactly when you’re sad (everything in it, the bass, the chords, the lyrics, the mood of the voice, screams heartbreak), as if your purpose is to increase the sadness or whatnot. Well, perhaps that is exactly the purpose.

And it never really began, but in my heart it was so real

Personally, listening to sad songs when I am sad is my way of doing catharsis. So I’d say catharsis is the perfect word to describe this song. Morrisey’s voice moves me so much… I mean, it’s not as if sad is a “bad” thing per se, so the “cleansing” would just be a “getting in touch with” a certain emotion, or feeling, etc, and understanding that it’s (their) existence is necessary.

And through catharsis, even sadness can be beautiful.

I know…

‘Cause tonight is just like any other night
That’s why you’re on your own tonight
