“There’s a carving on our gate,” said Dacey. “A woman in a bearskin, with a child in one arm suckling at her breast. In the other hand she holds a battleaxe. She’s no proper lady, that one, but I always loved her.”

"Rivers change course over many lifetimes, and eventually all bridges tumble down. A thousand years ago there was another city on this spot. The people carved the bones of whales and inscribed them with my Mark. Children still find them washed up in the river-mud."

Juan Mata and Ángel Di María’s interview after the match against QPR | September 14, 2014

Q. Juan, it was a comfortable scoreline but what was different about today?

JM: Well I think we played much, much better than the first games. Until the last minute we tried to score even more and I think that’s what we have to do with the players that we have. We have to play good, we have to score a lot of goals and be compact in defense.

Q. Is there an element of relief that you’ve got that first win?

JM: Yeah it’s very important for us. Hopefully it’s the first step on a good run of results. [An] important 3 points, and now training hard during the week and hopefully a win in the weekend again.

Q. Could you ask Ángel how much he enjoyed his home debut and whether or not his freekick that got the first goal, did he mean it? Was it a shot or a cross?

JM: He said that he’s very happy with his debut; his first game at home. And [as for] the goal, we’ve been practicing during the week. He has done this yesterday in the training so it’s not a surprise for me.

Q. Your own good start to the season; goal scoring, what do you put that down to?

JM: Well…getting into the box. I think that’s what I have to do. I can help the team [by] doing my best, trying to score [and] assist. Right now it’s my second goal of the season and I’m happy.

Q. Well today Ángel picked up the Barclay’s Man of the Match. Perhaps you could do the first ever presentation in Spanish for us?

JM: [in Spanish] Congratulations! Your first home match and “Man of the Match.”

ADM: Muchas gracias. Thank you very much.

JM: He says “thank you.” [laughs]
