goetic demon

SO, I never uploaded my final project for last semester’s SEQA100 course. GREAT class, great feedback, felt pretty great about this project at the time, aaaand. I kinda feel like this sucks now. But I DID put a lot of work into this, and in all likelihood I will be revisiting it very soon (not in this strip format, though), so it’s going up here for posterity.

Anyway basically the girl is named Gladys and the little demon she summons is Buer, my All Time Favorite Demon Forever. A big part of the project was to self-publish your minicomic yourself, so I also have some cute paper copies left over for fun:

Good project! And despite the flaws I’m picking over now, I’m still pretty excited to work on it some more on my own time.

Summoning Demons (Quick Rundown):

Paimon is the ninth demon of the Goetia. He is a great king, ruling 200 legions, among them are those of the Order of Angels and the Order of Potentates. When called upon, he will appear accompanied by kings Abal/Labal and Labali/Abali, as well as 25 legions; unless the conjurer wishes otherwise. He comes in the form of a man with a beautiful face riding a dromedary, clad in a great crown. When summoned, an offering must be given; some sources suggest sacrifice. A great host of spirits with trumpets and cymbals, among other musical instruments, also accompany him.

He has a great voice, often roaring when he appears. The conjurer must tell him to alter his voice; otherwise he will continue to speak in such volumes. He may teach all arts and sciences, give dignity, and may bind any man to the conjurer. He teaches of the earth, and the origins of the wind. He gives good familiars. He is to be observed towards the west. He is of the Order of Dominations, and very loyal to Lucifer.

He can be constrained by the angel Hasiel.

The Thirty-ninth Spirit is Malphas. He appeareth at first like a Crow, but after he will put on Human Shape at the request of the Exorcist, and speak with a hoarse Voice. He is a Mighty President and Powerful. He can build Houses and High Towers, and can bring to thy Knowledge Enemies’ Desires and Thoughts, and that which they have done. He giveth Good Familiars. If thou makest a Sacrifice unto him he will receive it kindly and willingly, but he will deceive him- that doth it. He governeth 40 Legions of Spirits, and his Seal is this, etc.

Pseudomonarchia daemonum – Johann Wier (1583) (quoted)

Malphas is a great president, he is seene like a crowe, but being cloathed with humane image, speaketh with a hoarse voice, be buildeth houses and high towres wonderfullie, and quicklie bringeth artificers togither, he throweth downe also the enimies edifications, he helpeth to good familiars, he receiveth sacrifices willinglie, but he deceiveth all the sacrificers, there obeie him fourtie legions.

Malphas – Dictionnaire Infernal

Dictionnaire Infernal – Collin de Plancy (1863) (paraphrased)
A grand-president of hell who governs 40 legions, Malphas appears as a raven, or in human form with a raucous voice. He builds citidels and impregnable towers, breaks down enemy barricades, finds good workers, gives familiars, and will receive sacrifices but deceive the sacrificers.

President Foras

Foras is a powerful President of Hell, being obeyed by twenty-nine legions of demons. He teaches logic and ethics in all their branches, the virtues of all herbs and precious stones, can make a man witty, eloquent, invisible, and live long, and can discover treasures and recover lost things.

Marquis Samigina

Gamigin (also Gamygin, Gamigm or Samigina) is a Great Marquis of Hell who rules over thirty legions of demons. He teaches all liberal sciences and gives an account of the souls of those who died in sin and who drowned in the sea, speaking with a rough voice. He also answers what is asked about, and stays with the conjurer until he or she is satisfied.

Gamigin is depicted as a little horse or a donkey, which changes form into a man under the conjurer’s request.

furfur is a demon that takes the form of a winged hart. he is compelled to tell the truth when put inside of a magic triangle. Otherwise he will always tell lies. Furfur causes love between a man and a woman, creates storms, tempests, thunder, lightning, and blasts, and teaches on secret and divine things.

Marquis Amon

Amon is a Marquis of Hell who governs forty infernal legions.

He appears as a wolf with a serpent’s tail who can breathe fire, or as a man with dog’s teeth in a head like a raven, or as a raven-headed man. He tells of all things past and future.

He procures feuds, and reconciles controversies between friends and foes.
