"Over one-half of our currently deployed aircraft are not combat ready. Fifty-five percent of deployed Navy and Marine Corps aircraft are not fully mission capable. For every two aircraft sent on deployment, one of them cannot perform a critical mission for which it was deployed . Despite this, the Navy faces a nearly $100 million funding shortfall for aviation maintenance and logistics this year alone."

To put this into less sensationalist perspective, there are typically not enough aircrew in a typical air wing or squadron to sustain flight ops with 100% of the assigned aircraft 100% of the time. Percent of assigned sorties completed is a better measure of actual performance. But still… equipment is breaking at a rate that outstrips our budget to fix it. The line is not trending in the right direction.
