After its famous charge at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863, Confederate Gen. George Pickett’s division suffered a serious loss of officers. All three brigadier generals and six colonels were killed. Fifteen regimental commanders and 16 of 17 field officers were either killed, wounded, missing, or captured. As this report from Armistead’s Brigade documents, replacements could not be named in two of the brigadier’s five regiments, and captains were promoted three steps to command regiments.
