Recycle Your Ink Cartridges.

In the United States, 13 ink cartridges are thrown away every 2 seconds. It takes less than half the energy to re-manufacture plastic than to create it new. There are 2 ways that you can help reduce the waste:

  1. Refill your own ink cartridges.
  2. Take your empty ink cartridges to a recycle center. You can find a center near you by visiting

If you are still debating if it is worth your time to recycle print cartridges, below are three other reasons why it is important for us to recycle:
  1. Ink pollutes the environment.
  2. The plastic used to make the cartridges take several years to decompose.
  3. It takes 3 quart of oil to produce one printer cartridge.

So it's Valentine's - what did you get HIM?

It happens all too often that women are the only ones to get showered with gifts on Valentine’s. But what about the guys? Why don’t they deserve to be romanced, or at least given a present on this occasion?

Marie Claire has some great ideas for giving gifts to men on Valentine’s. Here are some of the magazine’s ideas:

  1. A GPS system - I think this is great if it’s within your price range.
  2. Sign him up for a Beer of the Month club - maybe you could make it romantic & sign yourself up, too!
  3. Netflix - my favorite! And it’s a great excuse to spend time together.

The weather is inconsistent, but your health doesn't need to be.

Wow, has anyone else noticed that crazy weather this year? One day, it’s hot and I am in shorts and the next day it’s snowing and I am in my down jacket. With all the fluctuations in the weather, I have increased my intake of foods with antioxidants. And, it has worked, I have not been sick to this date. A few of the foods that I have added into my diet or increased eating are:

  • Apples
  • Raisins
  • Beans
  • Red grapes
  • Berries

Thank God this has worked for me! One of the first questions I had was what are antioxidants and what makes them work? Through some online research on webMD, (put link with webMD here is what I have found, antioxidants are vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that protect and repair cells from damage caused by free radicals. There are 3 major types:

1)    Beta-carotene

2)    Vitamin C

3)    Vitamin E

They can be found especially in fruits/veggies with purple, blue, red, orange and yellow shades.

My mind is running, but I am exhausted …do you ever feel like that?

Well I’ve found that one of the most effective ways to slow down your mind is meditation. Meditation is the art of focusing your attention in one area completely. Benefits of this may include:

  • a decrease in anxiety
  • relaxation through out the mind and body
  • an increase in positive feelings

I found a great site with tips for beginners that really helped me out. When I first started out meditating I could only sit for 5 minute increments, but the more I practiced, the longer I could do it without disruptive thoughts. A key component was to be patient with yourself! Below are 5 of my personal tips:
  1. Listen to a CD with nature sounds or a guided meditation.
  2. Sit in an area that is dimly lit or outside
  3. Concentrate on the breathing: Inhale for 8 counts, exhale for 4 counts.
  4. If you have an itch or need to re-adjust, do what you need to feel comfortable.
  5. If you can’t concentrate, STOP. Walk away for now and come back and try later.

There are no more excuses. It’s finally sunny outside, and it’s not too chilly anymore. It’s time to get back outside and exercise.

Here are a few tips to get you through your winter workout.

Allow for extra warm-up time. You have to loosen your muscles before exercising, and this takes a little longer in cold conditions.

Wear sunscreen. Contrary to popular belief, you can still get a sunburn in the winter! Also, wear lip balm so you don’t get cracked skin.

Avoid wearing cotton. Cotton tends to absorb sweat, which would only make your workout more uncomfortable. Look for clothes that repel moisture, like Under Armour.

5 Healthy Vending Machine Snacks

Just the other day, I forgot all my snacks at home. I was starving so I decided to get something out of the vending machine at work. I literally stood there for 5 minutest trying to guess my healthiest, most filling option. I decided on a granola bar which wasn’t very filling.

I decided to do a little research and find the healthiest vending machine snacks in case I am in that situation again. Below are the 5 healthy vending machine snacks that I thought you would like to know about:

  1. Trail Mix - This is a good substitute for cookies or candy bars. It’s a good mix of sweet and salty.
  2. Nuts - Make sure to get the ones that are raw and unsalted. This is a great source for protein.
  3. Animal Crackers - This is better for you then the 100 calories packs that keep you hungry after you are done.
  4. Raisinets - This is good to cure the sweet tooth and it won’t kill your diet.
  5. Baked Chips - This is a better option than Chex Mix.

I am so glad I found this article because I always though Chex Mix were better than chips and than peanut M&M’s where better than Raisinets. Obviously, that is not the case.

What is your back up plan?

This has to be the most dreaded thing that could happen to you. You are running late, you lock and shut your front door only to find out you have left your keys inside of your home. Your only options are to A) Call a locksmith, which will cost you a pretty penny or B) hopefully you have a roommate that can come home to let you in. Or what if you dropped your car off to get it serviced and forgot you left your house key with your car keys? Either way, it is not a fun experience. There are few things in life you can lose that will drive you insane searching for it. Losing a wallet is one of them.  Your wallet has enough documents for someone to ruin your credit, spend all of your money and make life a living nightmare.  So what steps should you take if you happen to lose your wallet? A Feel Good Story

I am a sucker for feel good stories. Something about me just loves seeing people helping others. Here is a perfect example. In Brooklyn, New York, at the subway, a high gust of wind blew a stroller that had a baby strapped in it onto the tracks as a train was approaching. Without hesitation a man jumped onto the tracks to lift the baby up to safety and pull himself up just in the nick of time. He is now a hero, but the story doesn’t stop there! This man was unemployed and once this story broke, a headline from The Christian Post read, "Public Demands Job for ‘Subway Hero’ Delroy Simmonds for Saving Baby’s Life.” Needless to say Delory was offered a job and everyone involved in the incident is doing just fine. CPR + The Bee Gees = Staying Alive?

I was reading AOL news today when I ran across an article that really caught my attention. Now, before I go into details, I want to tell you WHY it caught my attention. For some reason I have always thought what would happen if I were with someone and they went into a cardiac arrest? I know… weird thoughts huh? If that was to ever happen I would not know what to do. Then today I read this article on how to apply CPR. If you have never taken a CPR class, I encourage you to watch this video. By simply pushing on someone’s chest to the rhythm of “Staying Alive” by the Bee Gees, could possibly save someone’s life. Have you ever experienced anything like this before, Gables Uptown Tower?

Beer for my...Dog?!

Now that summer is officially here, it feels great to chug a beer or two with some friends. In fact, it’s so great; one woman felt she should make a beer for her “best friend”….her DOG! It is called Bowser Beer and comes in two flavors: Beefy Brown Ale and Cock-a-Doodle-Brew. According to this website, “it doesn’t have any hops in it, which are toxic to dogs; rather, it’s made of meat-broth, malt barley, and glucosamine, which is added for joint health.” Sounds pretty cool, but it is $19.99 for a 6-pack. 5 Easy Apartment Makeovers

I am getting a little tired of the way my apartment is looking. I have been doing some research on cheap and quick ways to change it up. I was talking to a friend who is an interior designer and she gave me 5 great tips.

The tips below are easy, fast, and make a great impact. She showed me some pictures and  I was really impressed!

  1. Find the most predominant color in your room and paint the ceiling that color.
  2. Buy a plant and put it in the emptiest corner. I love long bamboo!
  3. Add wallpaper to your closet.
  4. Place a large mirror opposite of a window to make the room brighter.
  5. Re-organize your bookshelf. Place some books horizontal and some vertical. This will give it a great contrast.

What To Do: Basketball or Baseball?

I can’t decide what to do Wednesday night. I love basketball and baseball. The Mavericks are playing Memphis Grizzles and Rangers are playing Toronto Blue Jays. Both should be really fun games.

The Mavericks are playing at 7:30 at the American Airlines Center and The Rangers are playing at 7:05 at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. I am leaning more toward the basketball game since their season is closer to being over and it’s closer to where I live.

Decorating for Spring

Spring is my favorite time of year! Everything feels so fresh, crisp and new, expect my apartment. I want to give my apartment a fresh makeover.  I have white walls, dark brown furniture and a nude shade couch. I have been looking for ideas to add liveliness to my home.

I have run across some pretty neat, cost effective ideas that I am thinking about trying out such as painting my focal wall, cleaning my windows more often, and incorporating some indoor plants. I think I am going to make my wall a light blue or light green color, something that brightens the room up, but doesn’t make it look like a nursery. I read that having dirty windows allows less light in and makes a room look dull, so I will try to clean my windows more frequently. I don’t have indoor plants right now, but I was thinking some vibrant flowers or colored vases with white flowers could help brighten up my place.

3 Ways to Rid the Sleepiness

Have you ever felt tired after a good night of rest? Well, this has been happening to me lately and I can’t snap out of it. I am yawning through out my day and feel drained. Last week I started doing a few little tricks to help me get my energy back.

  1. I have read that stress can be very draining. I make sure that I deal with the things stressing me as they come up and then leave them behind. If it’s something I can’t fix right away, I write it down so I don’t forget and focus on the task at hand.
  2. I usually just eat almonds for protein, but recently learned that they help give energy as well. I carry 24-26 almonds with me to work for a pick-me-up around 3pm.
  3. I make sure I am hydrated at all times. Dehydration can lead to fatigue.

I started using these pointers about a week ago and I have noticed that my eyes don’t feel so heavy at certain times of the day and I mentally more alert through out the day.

I am all about helping the environment and adding time to my day. People always say, “I wish there was more time in a day”, well you can create more time, just cut back on the 20-30 minute showers each day.

When I first read this article, my first thought was I am a woman with long hair, there is no way this is possible. But it is, I put shampoo in my hair, leave it in while I wash my face and then rinse it all off. Then, I put conditioner in my hair, scrub the rest of my body and then rinse it all off and I am out the shower … OK, so this may take more like 8 minutes, but it’s far better than 20-30 minutes. It’s progress not perfection…
