Greetings comics readers! Sorry to have missed last week due to work travel abroad. This week we have a very, very important week for comics and in particular around women and comics. Why? Because both of the big two are launching books that are specifically being marketed to female readers. Let’s go.
If you’ve read this blog, listened to the early review on the podcast I co-host on CBR, or have followed the semi-official Tumblr I created, you know I am excited about this book. As the mother of a teenage girl I have a DC Comic I can unflinchingly share with her. As someone who has been writing and writing about the potential of the female reader, I have book that recognizes that potential. And as someone who loves terrific fun sequential art, I have a wonderful new monthly title. Go read and let me know what you think!
Marvel’s Ms. Marvel is, of course, the ground zero of the “WUT women will start reading comics if we offer them something new, non-problematic and available easily on digital? Whudda thunk?” mode that we see in comics. Now we have them raise the ante by giving the moniker of one of their most visible heroes to a woman and “Not a hoax! Not a dream!” Marvel actually announced this book on The View which, although not my choice, does target women. Marvel, however, did not provide me with a review copy of this book so I can’t really tell you much about it other than Aaron is a good writer and the art is pretty. If you pick it up, let me know what you think.
The first issue of The Fade-Out was great and this second issue proves this is going to be another great series for Brubaker/Philipps
I am totally in love with book … and Dick … and Helena.
Phil Noto did a sketch of Laura for me at a show a few years ago and if that doesn’t tell you about how excited about this issue than I’ll just say “I’m excited.”
Oh man the JayToddz fans are going to be all over this.
I made the first issue of this a pick of the week and a lot of you said you enjoyed it. So pick up issue #2!
I have not been reading Batman/Superman due to budget issues but, damn, this Jae Lee cover of Supes, Catwoman and Bats is so good I might have to dig for some pocket change.
That’s it for me. What’s on your list. What do you think I missed?
