Seen in a range of mythologies, mermaids are half-human, half-fish creatures who dwell in the seas. While at times portrayed as malicious creatures who lured men to their deaths with siren songs, even harmless mermaids were known to forget or not realize that humans could not breathe as they could, and would pull oxygen-breathers underwater, drowning them.
Witches in fairy tales often represent dark and pure evil. It is said that they take away children from their parents or eat them. Witches are often linked with night & darkness, black cats & birds, potions and dark magic.
In his absence things are usually quiet on the island. The fairies take an hour longer in the morning, the beasts attend to their young, the redskins feed heavily for six days and nights, and when pirates and lost boys meet they merely bite their thumbs at each other. But with the coming of Peter, who hates lethargy, they are under way again: if you put your ear to the ground now, you would hear the whole island seething with life.
The fisherman could not stop staring. You see, he had fallen in love at first sight, and because he was a young man, and terribly headstrong, he thought he must keep her with him. He clutched the sealskin to his chest, pressing it to his pounding heart.
"Dear lady," he said gently, "be my wife, for I have fallen madly in love with you, and without your sealskin, you’ll have to live on land. I’ll make you happy, that I promise."
"Please sir," she cried, "my folk will be so worried. I must go home. Never could I be happy on land."

FAIRY TALE MEME∙ [1/1] Fairy Tale ∙ Den Lille Havfrue (The Little Mermaid) by Hans Christian Andersen
The little mermaid parted the purple curtains of the tent and saw the beautiful bride asleep with her head on the Prince’s breast. The mermaid bent down and kissed his shapely forehead. She looked at the sky, fast reddening for the break of day. She looked at the sharp knife and again turned her eyes toward the Prince, who in his sleep murmured the name of his bride. His thoughts were all for her, and the knife blade trembled in the mermaid’s hand. But then she flung it from her, far out over the waves. Where it fell the waves were red, as if bubbles of blood seethed in the water. With eyes already glazing she looked once more at the Prince, hurled herself over the bulwarks into the sea, and felt her body dissolve in foam.

The Seelie court are known to seek help from humans, to warn those who had accidentally offended them, and to return human kindness with favors of their own. Still, a fairy belonging to this court will avenge insults and could be prone to mischief. The most common time of day to see them is twilight. Other names for the Seelie court are ‘The Shining Throng’ and ‘The Golden ones’ and ‘The light Court’. The categorization of fairies based on court is whether or not they are a light or dark fairy. Light fairies are known for playing pranks on humans and having a light hearted attitude, forgetting their sorrows quickly and not realizing how they might be affecting the humans they are playing pranks on. When he had made two snips, he saw the red riding hood shining, and then he made two snips more, and the little girl sprang out, crying, “Ah, how frightened I have been! How dark it was inside the wolf!”
Down in the valley, close to where he lived, there was a large deep loch, and in the loch, so the country folk said, there dwelt a water kelpie. Now water kelpies, as all the world knows, are cruel and malicious spirits, who love nothing better than to lure mortals to destruction. And this is how they set about it:
They take the form of a beautiful horse, and come out of the water, all saddled and bridled, as if ready to be mounted; then they graze quietly by the side of the road, until some luckless creature is tempted to get on their back. Then they plunge with him into the water, and he is no more seen.
Of all the delectable islands the Neverland is the snuggest and most compact, not large and sprawly, you know, with tedious distances between one adventure and another, but nicely crammed. When you play at it by day with the chairs and table-cloth, it is not in the least alarming, but in the two minutes before you go to sleep it becomes very nearly real.
FAIRY TALE MEME∙ [1/3] Locations/Kingdoms ∙ Sleeping Beauty’s Castle (from La Belle au bois dormant/The Sleeping Beauty by Charles Perrault)
At the end of a hundred years the throne had passed to another family from that of the sleeping princess. One day the king’s son chanced to go a-hunting that way, and seeing in the distance some towers in the midst of a large and dense forest, he asked what they were. His attendants told him in reply the various stories which they had heard. Some said there was an old castle haunted by ghosts, others that all the witches of the neighborhood held their revels there. The favorite tale was that in the castle lived an ogre, who carried thither all the children whom he could catch. There he devoured them at his leisure, and since he was the only person who could force a passage through the wood nobody had been able to pursue him.
