’ hey, whoa, it’s not that —— !
have as many gay thoughts as you want,
as many gay whatevers as you want, that’s totally cool.
it’s, ah, it’s, well … ‘
and from one cringingly awkward misunderstanding to the even more grimacing admittance that would unknot their metaphorically tangled wires, so to speak ;
it’s something of an amusing tradition now ; after any of the probending matches they catch together, the following destination of choice is usually narook’s. good food, usually good company, and a quiet enough atmosphere that two waterbenders can avidly critique
and mock the performances of probending underlings they might have seen in the arena, or anybody else that’s managed to irritate either in the week.
striding into the restaurant with little attention paid to the world around, scathing dismissals and observations already issuing forth from the both of them, it had been unfortunate that neither korra nor tahno had quite noticed the ’ wet floor ’ sign along the main gangway, and that neither had been able to catch or right tahno himself before he went slamming backwards into the ground, master of the most changeable element bested by a small puddle. contents of his coat pocket skittered free on impact with the floor, between her poorly suppressed snorts, korra had gone to round up tahno’s belongings while he collected himself, and that’s when she’d caught sight of the photo, fluttered loose from his wallet in the collision. nothing hugely implicating, per se, just the usual couple’s picture, not unlike the one she used to have of mako and herself, and that’s why korra hadn’t questioned it at first. tahno hand in hand with another man, unknown to her, at one of those festival picture booths in republic city. but, well, she hadn’t known that tahno was a usual couple kind of person at all, not after her first few encounters with him had generally involved crowds of fawning women at his heels, and that’s where her double take originated.
she can imagine why her close and slow scrutiny might fluster tahno as it appears to have done, but really, korra’s surprise is less along the line of i didn’t know you liked men than it is along the line of i didn’t know you were capable of a loving romantic relationship like the rest of humanity. hence, her continued inability to properly articulate a sensible reply.
well, would you be able to say such a thing to somebody ?
’ it’s not about that, it’s just — didn’t know you were, y’know.
into real relationships and … stuff. ’
scrunching her nose at her own poor wording, korra just hands the photo back over along with a handful of other knick-knacks that’d rolled out of his pocket. spirits, dinner could prove to be awkward this week.
’ just … yeah. ‘
