Blockupy: anti-ECB protest in Frankfurt – in pictures
A demonstration organised by the Blockupy movement to protest against the policies of the European Central Bank began after it officially inaugurated its new headquarters on Wednesday morning in Frankfurt, Germany. Thousands of protesters took part while riot police equipped with water cannon established a wide security perimeter around the ECB site.
Sorry to bother you but i am from england and dont quite understand what is happening in frankfurt, could you please explain if it isnt too much bother?
The Blockupy protest in Frankfurt coincided with the official opening of the new building of the European Central Bank. The ECB is pretty much everything that’s wrong with the EU. It’s an enormously powerful, unelected and undemocratic group of bankers and ex-wall street people that sets much of the policy in the European Union. They are the driving force behind the terrible austerity policies in much of Europe that favour paying back loans to financial institutions to keeping a functioning, social society. In this time of Austerity, where they have been actively destroying people’s lives (in Greece for example following the austerity measures the number of suicides rose by almost 40%) the ECB has built a new head-office, costing 1.3 billion Euros.
So that’s what the protests are about. They are against capitalism, against the violence that is austerity and poverty and against the stranglehold of the financial institutions over what should be a democratic system.
PLEASE STOP POSTING PHOTOS WITH UNPIXELATED FACES ON THEM FROM FRANKFURT YESTERDAY!
You endanger people [even if they were not part of the violent demonstrations being at “the wrong place at the wrong time” can make you look bad anyway]!
And keep in mind that there WERE violent protests and that these people also do not want their faces all over the media (boss, police, teachers,…) respect this! .
So if you want to post pictures please make sure to pixelate the faces!
Early morning clashes broke out in Frankfurt on Wednesday between police and ‘Blockupy’ protesters, as the ECB (European Central Bank) opens its €1.3 billion ($1.4 billion) headquarters in the city. Police fired teargas in an attempt to disperse the crowd, who set a police car on fire.
