Electronics Boutique January 1994 Catalog - Sega CD

One of the best things about these catalogs is seeing pre-release box art. Both Sonic CD and Joe Montana’s NFL Football are both very different from their final versions. Interesting choice of clipart in the top corner of the first page. Apparently the catalog editor didn’t know (or perhaps care) that there aren’t any actual sharks in Sewer Shark.

Electronics Boutique January 1994 Catalog - PC Accessories

Yup, that’s an $85 mouse and $105 9600 baud modem. Tell me again how terrible it is to have China produce cheap computer parts.

Electronics Boutique January 1994 Catalog - Sega Genesis

Would it surprise you to learn that many of the Sonic 3 sweatshirts mentioned above went home with employees? There was literally no tracking of bonus items back then, we just had a giant box filled with sweatshirts. I think that pre-release box art for Eternal Champions is substantially better than the final product.

Electronics Boutique January 1994 Catalog - PC Entertainment

Getting near the end of games coming on 3.5” disks. Many of these games were re-released on CD-ROM.

Electronics Boutique January 1994 Catalog

In January 1994 I was a lowly clerk at an Electronics Boutique store. I’ve said at least 1,000 times that if it paid what I earned today I’d still be there. It was a fun time to be at a game store - the height of the 16-bit era and the very beginning of multimedia PCs.

Over the next few days (maybe hours) I’ll be posting this lovely catalog from then:

Here’s the table of contents which is also the entire 3DO section. That should give you an idea of how well it was doing in the stores. The Atari Jaguar was in all the stores at this point but not mentioned in the catalog once.
