Generally, I like Lee Brice. I think he’s a swell guy with some serious talent. But this song, written by Doug Johnson and Tim James, really irks me.
It’s this, in particular:
Just ask him how he did it; he’ll say pull up a seat
It’ll only take a minute, to tell you everything
Be your best friend, tell the truth, and overuse I love you
Go to work, do your best, don’t outsmart your common sense
Never let your prayin’ knees get lazy
And love like crazy”
If it only takes a minute, why should I bother to pull up a seat? That seems excessive, especially considering that it definitely takes LESS than a minute for him to tell me “everything.” Instead, why can’t we just be honest here? “Just ask him how he did it; he’ll say pull up a seat. It’s gonna take an hour to tell you everything!”
As if that weren’t bad enough, I’m still not sure how one can be one’s own best friend. I guess perhaps I should pat myself on the back more often? Treat myself to a fancy dinner from time to time? Give myself more presents? I just don’t know. Thoughts are welcome.
