Drugs and Mental Health

Today we had a man called Paul Dillon {view his website here (http://darta.net.au) and his blog here (http://doingdrugs-darta.blogspot.com.au)} come to our school and present a presentation on Drugs and Alcohol. He came to our school last year, in grade 10, and was surprisingly entertaining. His philosophy was to not tell kids not to do drugs, it’s to tell kids what happens if things go wrong. Now I like this philosophy as teens won’t listen to someone who tells them ‘Don’t do drugs and Alcohol’, teens just don’t work that way.
So his coarse is a 3 year coarse, in which he comes to our school 3 times in grade 10, 11 and 12 to give us many different talks. This year (11th Grade) was more to do with the drugs side of things. He said many good things, but the thing that stuck with me the most was the Drugs and Mental Health section. Now this part really reminded me of Ben, (view the story here: http://xthelostangelx.tumblr.com/post/107471629110/so-theres-this-guy-called-ben-we-met-when-i-was ) In short, we met when I was in hospital and he was there for schizophrenia and depression, caused by drugs. Now I never really understood how drugs related to mental illness until Paul Dillon described it to us today. He said having drugs when your family is prone to mental health disorders is like putting a key in a lock and unlocking mental health problems. It doesn’t happen to everyone, but it can, and in every person there’s a small chance it could happen.
When Paul was speaking my mind automatically flew back to 6 months ago, when I was in hospital, and I saw how badly the drugs were affecting Ben. He heard voices, and he was scared to go outside because he thought the birds were watching him. It made me sad thinking about it, and I only wish he had the information Paul told us before he decided to try drugs.
That’s why I’m going to try my hardest to tell you guys the most important thing Paul told us, here it is:

Do not smoke cannabis if someone in your family has/has had a mental health disorder.

Drugs and your mental health do not mix, you could be threatening yourself to a life time of mental illnesses, including depression and schizophrenia.

Please please please don’t take cannabis if you are prone to mental health disorders. No one deserves to have a mental health disorders especially if it can be avoided.

I hope you all have a wonderful day
