Diddikai problems

"You’re rroma? But you’re so white! I don’t believe you!"

"Why don’t say you’re white? Then people will like you more"

"Rroma doesn’t really count, you’re white anyway"

"I’m going to insult Roma in front of you, as you’re half, you can’t be offended!"

Poem: Diddikai

Babo, you’ve doomed me

To wander alone

No Rrom will let me inside

Mama, you’ve ruined me

I will never find love

No Rrom will want me as a bride

Gryátsa! Gryátsa!

That’s what they all call

Whenever they see me advance

Dévla, please help me

I want to fit in

But no one will give me a chance

Being diddikai is so hard

You’re always trying to balance on a tightrope

You try to be active in gadje relationship

And you still try to stay traditional

You’re too pale to be romani

To Romani to be gadje

No one on either side understands

No one on either side cares

Yaaaay čhiftele! I finally got tired of craving it and made some lol.

So good on a cold day. Rromani comfort foods (:

What are some family favorites of yours? Esp. With the cold weather I’m looking for other recipes to try

WARNING. BRIEF RANT...

OKAY. YES. WE HAVE ESTABOLISHED THIS, I AM PALE. I AM ALSO DIDDIKAI. I AM A LITTLE OVER HALF ROMANI. I AM NOT A FUCKING POSER. THERE ARE PLENTY OF LIGHT SKINNED RROMA. WE DONT ALL MOTHERFUCING LOOK LIKE ESMERALDA. GO BACK TO YOUR RACIST TV SHOW ON TLC. TENDER, LOVE, AND RACIST MOTHERFUCKERS.

Can I ask what you think of Javert from Les Miserables? In the book, it's explicitly stated that his mother is Rroma (his father isn't specified, and the g-slur is unfortunately used) and he is described as having dark hair dark eyes etc.

Some of us were actually having a discussion about this not too long ago (I’ll link to it if I can find it). I think it’s really interesting because IIRC, he really doesn’t like Rromani people and is ashamed of his heritage. He’s a good example of internalized racism. He’s moving his way up in the ranks of an institution that hates his own kind. He’s almost selling himself out for better status, or out of some deep-rooted shame. I would have to re-read the novel, but I totally love the idea of diddikai!Javert strugling with all of these things. It makes him that much more interesting in my opinion!

Roma culture struggles in its own families...

(This is a personal post. I’m not sure about you, but this is prevalent in my family)

Most of our younger generations won’t even talk or travel to see each other.

Most of my family no longer identifies with Roma culture. We have finally established “white life”, and it’s comfortable, and we’re no longer chased from towns.

But this is really saddening.
My culture is no longer existent even in my OWN FAMILY.

My cousins have spread out, moved on.
But what they don’t realize is how much they need our family. Just as much as I need them. We had a huge family, but now it’s dwindled out of Colorado. Our home. To Washington.

Only 4 people out of 130+ that I was raised with still talk with me.
The rest have severed familial ties for the dreams of suburban living.

Nothing is okay about this.
We’ve been white washed.
