10 Words in Mysterious Voynich Manuscript Decoded

A researcher claims he’s decoded 10 possible words in the famously unreadable Voynich manuscript, which has eluded interpretation for a century.

The book’s 250 vellum pages are filled with writings in an unknown alphabet and elaborate drawings depicting a range of subjects from female nudes to medicinal herbs to Zodiac symbols. The medieval text was discovered by an antique book dealer in 1912, and it has been rather stingy in giving up its secrets ever since.

Now Stephen Bax, a professor of applied linguistics at the University of Bedfordshire in England, says he’s deciphered 14 characters of the script and can read a handful of items in the Voynich text, such as the words for coriander, hellebore and juniper next to drawings of the plants. Read more.

 DECODED STORIES #1

The Alleged Stabbing of Lance Rivera.

When Vol 3… Life and Times of S.Carter, my fourth album hit the streets more than a month before the official release date, I was totally at a loss. One night I went to Q-Tip’s solo album release party and at some point in the night I ran into the guy everyone’s been telling me is behind the bootleg. So I approached him, when I told him what I suspected, to my suprise, he got real loud with me right there in the middle of the club. We separated and I went over to the bar. I was talking to people, but I was really talking to myself out loud. Before I even realized what I was doing I headed back over to him but this time I was blacking out with anger. The next thing I knew all hell had broken loose in the club. That night the guy went straight to the police and I was charged with assault.

After a couple of days I called my lawyer and turned myself in at the precinct, that’s when I realized how serious things were because they started setting up a press conference. The hilarious thing, if any of this can be considered funny is that the Rocawear Bubble Coat I was wearing when they paraded me in front of the cameras started flying off the shelves the last three weeks before Christmas.

Some lyrics become really profound when you see them in writing. Not ‘Big Pimpin’. That’s the exception. It was like, I can’t believe I said that. And kept saying it. What kind of animal would say this sort of thing? Reading it is really harsh.
—  Jay-Z, speaking to the Wall Street Journal in 2010 about revisiting past lyrics for Decoded, and the changes he noticed in himself as he did this.

Alright, everybody calm down! I’ve got this. After reversing the clip and doing careful pitch/speed changing, I decided that I’d try to make sense of that weird garbled gibberish message we’ve all heard of the 5th day.

Man, I worked [???1] but now, in the state of my [voice?2], you and your marveling [???3] would have not been easily profitable to employ on a [???4]dreadful advertory[?5] [???6]to indicate the influence of various[???7] I’ve heard a lot of [blank] I have proof, you are right. [???8] [Now would you look at me?9] I’ve [???10] read all the notes, and bring you the joy of creating/[creator?]

If anything, the final phone call is probably a note from the creator, just butchered and chopped up a little to make it spooky. Though, it’s that last bit that really gets me. Perhaps those little notes and papers/posters on the wall have a meaning or change depending on the day? Anyone want to fill me in on this?

(Un)Lucky Seven

We’ve talked about most of them individually over the course of this blog, and we’ve touched on the topic as a whole once or twice as well. But now, it’s about time we went fully in-depth on one of the most fascinating discoveries in Super Smash Bros. Brawl’s unused code. Last time on Decoded, we talked about the music that was cut from Brawl during development. Today, we’re delving into the cut characters. That’s right, folks! This is Wander, and get ready for Brawl to be…
