self-portrait at 18

thick hair
dyed blue
except for dark brown roots

immaculate brows
so often furrowed
in thought or confusion
above blue gray eyes
constantly shifting colors
like storm clouds over sea
beneath the eyes
reddish-purple bags
mark a lack of sleep

a delicate nose
round on the end
like a doll’s
lips a perfect pink Cupid’s bow
hiding crooked and off-white teeth

rosy cheeks
on pale and oily skin
a defined jaw and cheekbones softened
by baby fat
deep dimples
that appear with every smile

a proud neck
and strong shoulders
the large breasts inherited
from my mother
hang beneath

arms peppered with freckles
hands small and dexterous
with fingernails painted but shortened
by nervous habit

the flabby stomach
I have come to love
above thighs that jiggle when I walk

hairy calves strengthened
by years of marching band
wide feet
left ankle sprained
too many times to count
left foot broken twice
both feet
calloused and peeling
with the big space between
my first two toes
and the second toe
so much longer than the first
just like my mother’s
