[MONSTER] Gigan.

Japanese name: ガイガン
Romanized name: Gaigan

Alignment: Varies by continuity
Type: Alien, cyborg
Inspiration: Avian, robot
Status: Varies by continuity.

From: Godzilla vs. Gigan, Godzilla vs. Megalon, Godzilla Island, Godzilla: Final Wars

Trivia

  • The exact origin of “Gigan” is not clear. There is a Japanese word (義眼; gigan) that means “artificial eye”. However, it is pronounced as “gi-gan”, not “gai-gan”.
  • In the Showa movies, Gigan was an alien cyborg. Yet in Godzilla: Final Wars, Gigan was an ancient evil being and Mothra’s nemesis.
  • Gigan actually allied with Godzilla for a brief period in Godzilla Island. Dororin (Kumasogami in Yamato Takeru) shapeshifted into Gigan at one point.
  • On the promotional posters for Godzilla vs. Gigan, Gigan emitted a laser from its eye and forehead area. This was not actually seen in a movie until Final Wars.
  • Gigan appeared in the tokusatsu television series Zone Fighter (or Ryuusei Ningen Zone).
  • Gigan’s sound effect is used for the character Mele in Juuken Sentai Gekiranger.

daikaijuu answered your question: Pacific Rim comes out on DVD and blu-ray tomorrow….

iirc the blu-ray has more special features than the dvd. but the collectors edition doesnt have any more than the blu-ray

Right, but they aren’t pulling an Into Darkness thing. I won’t see Wal-mart special edition and Best Buy special edition that are different things that will require me to buy them all to get all the special features, yeah?

[MONSTER] Hedorah.

Japanese name: ヘドラ
Romanized name: Hedora

Alignment: None
Type: Alien, kaiju, mutant
Inspiration: Pollution
Status: Varies by continuity.

From: Godzilla vs. Hedorah, Godzilla Island, Godzilla: Final Wars

Trivia

  • Its name is derived from “hedoro” (ヘドロ), a Japanese word for chemical ooze, slime, sludge or vomit.
  • Like Destoroyah, Hedorah evolved and went through four stages in its life cycle.
  • Neo Hedorah, colored like cotton candy, appeared in Godzilla Island. It could create poisonous mushrooms that drained the energy of those they attached to. Neo Hedorah was eventually killed by Fire Rodan.
  • Raremon in Digimon resembles Hedorah. Its debut episode even paid homage to scenes in Godzilla vs. Hedorah.
  • Hedorah’s left eye was injured during the final battle in Godzilla vs. Hedorah. In Godzilla: Final Wars, the same eye was accidentally pierced by Ebirah’s claw.

[MONSTER] Battra.

Japanese name: バトラ
Romanized name: Batora

Alignment: Varies by continuity
Type: Kaiju, guardian monster, insect
Inspiration: Lepidopteran, Mothra
Status: Varies by continuity.

From: Godzilla vs. MothraGodzilla Island

Trivia

  • Battra is not a bat. Its name is a blending of “battle” and “Mothra”. In the Super Godzilla game manual as well as on the packaging for a Bandai model kit, Battra is called “Battle Mothra” (バトルモスラ). Another alias is “Black Mothra”.
  • Battra may have been able to switch back and forth between larval and imago form at will.
  • Gigamoth, an unused Heisei Toho creature, could have been a prototype for Battra.
  • In Godzilla Island, Battra was a villain.
  • Battra was the only Heisei monster whose origin was not influenced by Godzilla.
  • Battra’s roar is a modified version of Rodan’s sound effect.
