Croque Monsieur. This is the ultimate toasted sandwich. It’s one of those dishes that I will often order if it’s on the menu somewhere for lunch.

Unfortunately I’ve had a few sad examples that are basically just ham and cheese sandwiches. A croque monsieur is not just a simple ham and cheese sandwich! Mustard and Béchamel sauce are essential for the croque.

I’ve finally got around to making my own croque. I took the recipe from The Guardian’s “How to make the perfect…” series and it seems to do the trick. Not the best croque monsieur I’ve ever made but it’s right up there with the best.
