I spent some time this weekend playing with some watercolors. I purchased a Winsor & Newton Cotman Compact Travel Set about 2 years ago and decided to finally pull it out and see what it could do. It is a good little set with 14 “student - grade” colors. (I have listed the pigments in parenthesis for reference)

The colors are:

  • Lemon Yellow Hue (PY175)
  • Cadmium Yellow Hue (PY97,PY65)
  • Yellow Ocher (PY42)
  • Burnt Sienna (PR101)
  • Burnt Umber (PBr7, PY42)
  • Cadmium Red Hue (PY65,PR255)
  • Cadmium Red Pale Hue (PR149, PR255)
  • Alizirin Crimson Hue (PR206)
  • Purple Lake (PV19)
  • Sap Green (PY139, PG36, PR101)
  • Viridian Hue (PG7)
  • Cerulian Blue Hue (PB15)
  • Ultramarine (PB29)
  • Chinese White (PW4)

You can tell that these pigments are not the best quality, however most of them are listed as good or decent quality. Now that I have this knowledge I can proceed with sketching and painting a little bit. I have never really used watercolors before, so this is a learning process.
