What if Pearl has really low self esteem. If the reason she always jumps to explain things and tries so be perfect is because she's attempting to prove to herself and everyone else that she deserves to be on the team. What if when she was fighting Sugalite and said she wasn't strong enough she actually felt like she failed as a crystal gem and admitted to something she's constantly afraid of...

Well, I wouldn’t say Pearl has really low self-esteem. She has her boastful moments such as her swordsmanship (i.e. Steven the Sword Fighter) and she says, “Oh, I hate fighting myself” (or something along those lines) in the half-hour special. So, she is pretty confident in her abilities. I can see her being self-conscious, especially in regards to Coach Steven with fighting Sugilite (probably because Steven was looking up to Sugilite rather than her).

I see where you’re coming from though! To be honest, I’m getting ANGSTY feels thinking about it in that perceptive. bECAUSE PEARL IS PRECIOUS BIRB PRINCESS AND I JUST CAN’T.

Even though the current roleplay I have going with crystal-gem-pearl is literally in that perceptive except Pearl is human and the struggle is even more real.

This is how Garnet and Amethyst fuse to become Sugilite.

(A lot of things went through my head at that time, at the same time x3)
