Photoshop CS5 | Difficulty: Novice
Using adjustment layers such as Selective Color, Saturation, and Color Fill.

image

step 01 | The first thing you’ll want to do is duplicate your layer by right-clicking and selecting “duplicate layer.” It doesn’t really matter what you name it, so don’t worry about that. Once you have done that, set the blend to Screen with an opacity of 40%. Once you have done this, merge your visible layers (CTRL + SHIFT + E)

step 02 | Now that you have the lightened version, we’re going to use the Selective Color adjustment layer (you can choose this by clicking the black and white half-circle at the bottom right in your layer options.) Once you open this up, make sure that you are in the Reds colors first. Match your percentages up with mine (-100, +4, -4, 0), and then switch from Reds to Neutrals. In neutrals you’re going to do the same thing but with different percentages (+10, 0, -10, 0). Click okay.

step 03 | After you’ve clicked okay and finished that layer, we’re going to make yet another Selective Color layer. Basically rinse and repeat step 02, except using the different percentages: Reds (+55, 0, +100, 0) / Neutrals (+20, 0, -15, 0). Click okay.

step 05 | Your layers panel should look like this. We’re going to merge our layers now and sharpen your image (Filter > Sharpen > Sharpen).

step 06 | Alright, now that we’ve merged our layers we’re going to make a Hue/Saturation layer. Make sure the drop-down menu is set to Reds and bump the saturation up +10- then click okay. After that, we’re going to make a Solid Color layer. Set your color to #750202 (dark red) and click okay. Once your layer pops up in your panel, set it to Lighten with an opacity of 40%. Once that’s done, merge visible layers.

step 07 | The last step! We’re going to make a solid color layer, but this time using a dark blue (#011083) instead of dark red. Just like the last one, we’re going to set it to Lighten with an opacity of 40%. Once that is done, merge visible layers and sharpen your image. You should then have your edited image!
