The female cub was born to giant panda Yuan Yuan on July 6th at Taipei Zoo in Taipei City, Taiwan. The cub’s parents, Yuan Yuan and Tuan Tuan, were gifts from China in 2006. She is the first such panda cub born outside mainland China that will be allowed to remain in its birthplace.
At birth, the cub weighed only 183.4 grams (about 6 1/2 ounces) and was 15.5 cm (6.1 inches) in length. Nurses at the zoo nicknamed the cub “Yuanzai” because she looked like a yuan zai, a rice meatball. She’ll get her official name in a few months.
