NASA awards $23.95 million contract to CIESIN

NASA has awarded a $23,952,626 contract to the Center for International Earth Science Information Network of the Earth Institute at the Columbia University Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory.

This is a follow-on contract for the continued development and operation of the Socioeconomic Data and Application Center or SEDAC as a Distributed Active Archive Center or DAAC for NASA’s Earth Observing System Data and Information System.

GIS (geographic information systems) Day is a grassroots celebration of geospatial technology and its capabilities. GIS day celebrations hosted events around the world to feature a variety of creative applications, new technologies, and new ways of thinking about GIS.

New Understanding of Soil Quality throughout Africa

The Africa Soil Information Service (AfSIS) Online Map Tool is an interactive mapping application that can display more than 30 maps of soil and related environmental characteristics for the continent of Africa. The tool creates a clickable map that lets users zoom in and examine soil characteristics from existing, legacy soil maps and data as well as a new collection of soil samples gathered by AfSIS over the past four years.
