Giant Golden Mole (Chrysospalax trevelyani)
…a large species of golden mole that is endemic to the forests of the Eastern Cape in South Africa. Unlike other golden moles which construct tunnels the giant golden mole feeds on the surface, foraging in the leaf litter for millipedes and earthworms. Giant golden moles are primarily nocturnal and feed at night, although some individuals have been observed feeding during the day in cloudy conditions. They are also generally solitary and territorial however, they show some signs of social behavior since some groups have been observed hibernating together.
Giant golden moles are currently listed as endangered due to the threat of habitat loss and limited range.
