Lily’s eyes stung as she read the headline of the article. Her heart ached for the family. Yet, it slowly sank as she realized that they hadn’t lived that far away. Just on the other side of London, in fact.

She heard footsteps and immediately folded the paper, obscuring the article.

Petunia entered the kitchen and frowned.

She grabbed the pitcher of orange juice and coldly asked, “What’s that freaky paper of yours have to say today?”

She took Lily’s silence as an adequate reply. Normally, Lily would have had a relatively witty comeback. Yet at the moment, Lily couldn’t say anything. She was battling the lump that had formed her throat.

Petunia’s eyebrows arched and she asked, “What’s wrong?”

She asked more out of curiosity than concern.

Lily opened her mouth but didn’t know what to say. She couldn’t tell Petunia that the number of casualties had tripled in the past year. She couldn’t tell Petunia that Muggleborns were dropping out of Hogwarts to spend time with their families - their remaining time. She couldn’t tell Petunia that the Ministry was remaining eerily quiet about the deaths; about the war entirely. She couldn’t tell Petunia that there was a war. She couldn’t tell Petunia that the war could very well affect them. She couldn’t tell Petunia how scared she was.

But mostly, she couldn’t tell Petunia that the magical world that she had been so excited to see was falling apart. She couldn’t tell Petunia that there was some magic that was dark, so dark that it was illegal. She couldn’t tell Petunia that the students of Hogwarts were rapidly becoming soldiers. She couldn’t tell Petunia that the thought of magic was no longer whimsical and exciting. She couldn’t tell Petunia that her dream had turned into a nightmare.

And so Lily swallowed and murmured, “Nothing.”

And she poured herself a cup of orange juice.

A new step towards earthquake forecasting?

The most difficult task facing an Earth scientist lies in advising upon the likelihood of natural hazards occurring within a definite time frame so that the difficult and expensive decision of whether and when to evacuate the populations at risk. Call it wrong in either direction you get an expensive and useless evacuation or a casualty filled disaster, and 7 Italian seismologists were actually sentenced to 7 years inside for a wrong call over the Aquila quake some years ago. No wonder that anything that helps improve accuracy is much sought after, since many lives are potentially at stake in many danger zones around the world such as Turkey and California.

The problem is that its bloody hard. One can measure the stress the rocks are under, estimate the tension, but telling an oncoming major rupture of devastating proportions apart from a bit of inconsequential slipping and sliding along the fault is a really tricky business. There are no clear symptoms as exist for volcanic eruptions (where the accuracy of prediction is reasonably good, except in some impoverished parts of the world), and the methods that worked once don’t seem easily applicable to different geological contexts. Previous attempts have explored such ideas as radon gas leaks, heat maps and animal behaviour. So far the best we can do is estimate x risk of a y magnitude quake sometime during the next z years.

A new lead may be about to improve matters…Iceland is a volcanic and quakey place, sitting on the Mid Atlantic Ridge where new crust is being created as the North American and European plates split apart, and recent research there has shown that changes in groundwater chemistry may help predict a larger rupture months in advance. Scientists sampled groundwater weekly over five years analysing the samples and found big spikes in the months before two major quakes in 2012 and 2013 over 80km away from the sampled area. The changes occurred as crustal stress built up to breaking point allowing aquifers to mix as they start to fracture.

Similar changes occurred before the 1995 Kobe quake that killed 6,500 people, but a single event does not build up sufficient data to justify further expensive study, so the fact that two quakes elsewhere were preceded by groundwater changes provides us with a route for further exploration that may lead to more accurate forecasts. Much further study is needed both in Iceland and around the globe, particularly to see if this technique can be used in different geological environments, but it is the best lead towards improving earthquake forecasting we have so far.

Original paper, paywall access:

I am at war with myself
I am both the victim
And the weapon of offense
The casualties are high
For it’s hard to win when you’re the the battleground
And the battle
My mind is a bloody mess of twisted metal and torn limbs
But you cannot see the damage
So you mark down my pain
As something of my imagination
But darling,
This war isn’t imagined
It is as real as midnight tears sliding down my face
It is as real as blood that pours from wrists
It is as real as fire that races and churns through the veins of someone that’s desperate to get lost
This war isn’t made up
And if you’re looking for scars or battle wounds
I’m sorry
But those are on the inside too.
—  Invisible Battles— Lily Rain

Now that the ep’s over and I can breathe again, can I just gush for a moment about what perfection that Crowley kill was?

Everything I love about that character could be summed up in the few seconds of that scene.

The wit, the callousness, the discomforting casualty with which he’ll take a life.

It all sounds terrifying, and it should. It comes naturally to him in a way that makes the passion and anger and brutality of the other deaths on the show seem fantastical, and the nonchalant manner in which he returns to his typical smirking, sassy self all the more jarring.

I love my heroes, but I’m grateful for the villains that keep both them (and us) on edge.

In short, Crowley scares the hell out of me.

And I hope he keeps it up until the end.

Lovestruck || Banning/Drew/Jamie

Drew wasn’t really focused on what was going on around him when he was tugging Jamie towards one of the rooms, but it’s not like he can be blamed. Jamie’s a cheeky, incredibly attractive trickster who he has somehow never had sex with, and now that he has the opportunity he’s excited. He didn’t mean to crash into Banning and manage to clumsily take both the trickster and the cupid down with him, but he’s got long legs that don’t really know what to do with themselves most of the time. It was inevitable that he was going to stumble at least a couple times a day, but this day in particular is unfortunate due to the other casualties. “Ah, fuck, I am so sorry. Is everyone still alive?” banningcasey

Obviously, these figures don’t include children killed in Somalia & Afghanistan.

If ever these strikes are reported in the MSM, many of these children are listed as “militants,” a word redefined by President Obama to mean any male of military age in a strike zone, so as to disguise the number of children killed by his drone policy. Under this abuse of presidential power with lack of judicial oversight, Obama has escalated George W. Bush’s drone program more than five times over.

Not only are children & civilians caught in strike zones, but drones are killing rescuers & family members with the “double tap” method, a second strike in the same zone. The “double tap” is considered to be a war crime under international law.
