METADATA: The Smiths - “Paint A Vulgar Picture”

The Smiths were always a band infamously in need of hugs, and this fact is especially apparent in this 1987 tunebummer (perhaps I’m being redundant). The song is, front to back, heavily critical of how radio and record labels use and abuse artists in order to promote the bottom line. The label in question is deliberating over the best way to cash in on its star musician’s death - should they repackage his older records, or create a best-of compilation of just the hits? This may sound extraordinarily, well, vulgar, but it does happen. Record sales jump hundreds of percentage points after an artist dies, and labels take advantage - look at Michael Jackson or Whitney Houston.

Unfortunately, the song is pretty based in reality for the band; in fact, biz drama continues to follow frontman Morrissey to this day. Last year, he leaked to fan site True To You that he was being dropped by his label, Capitol/Harvest, just weeks after releasing World Peace Is None of Your Business. This came as a surprise to the label, who said that no, actually, he was definitely still signed with them. Morrissey then lambasted Harvest for not promoting the record enough, but forced them to remove it from online retailers like Spotify and iTunes. His next move was to tell an interviewer he may have cancer, blurting out the most Morrissey thing ever said with “If I die, then I die,” and began wearing “Fuck Harvest” shirts during the few shows he didn’t cancel. Harvest, to its everlasting credit, began selling knockoffs of the shirt online. Maybe no one told Morrissey that you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar, but given his animal activism, he’s probably not interested in catching flies.

U.S. Capitol Building shooting

A man shot himself near the U.S. Capitol Building today, police said, prompting the building to be put on lock down and staff told to shelter in place.

The man shot himself near the West Front of the U.S. Capitol Building today, according to police. He was wearing a blue backpack and had a sign taped to his hand, and there was also a suitcase nearby, law enforcement sources told ABC News. Bomb technicians were preparing to approach the suitcase to check its contents.

Although the man shot himself, the Capitol was locked down as a precautionary measure, Sgt. Kimberly Schneider of the U.S. Capitol police said. (ABC News)

Had some fun exploring the town at midnight last night after work and ended up on a rooftop behind the Capitol.
To take these pictures you get a cable and attach a whisk to the end of it. Then you stuff steel wool inside of the whisk and light it on fire! Then you spin the cable around your head and set your camera on time lapse mode and the result is this pictures. Go try it out, you won’t be disappointed! Just make sure you’re wearing a hoodie so you don’t get any of the burning sparks on your skin.
