Daria Morgendorffer was the awesomely sarcastic, witty, and misanthropic teen star of Daria, an animated series that ran from 1997 to 2002. Daria’s sly and dry-witted criticisms about popular culture and social standards made her a cultural icon. But don’t tell her I called her a cultural icon.

Check out these custom heels I created for BUST’s Feb/March ‘13 issue. All it took was a drill, spikes, and some paint to take these basic heels to the next level. Be sure to grab the issue, which also features a round-up of custom shoes you can buy if you aren’t the DIY type. I wear them with this dress because I love the sweetness of the dress paired with the bad-ass spikes. I bet these shoes would also look banging with the Wizard of Awesome dress from ModCloth.

Was Shirley Temple the original riot grrrl? I loved this outfit, which Shirley wore in The Little Princess. When I was in Grad School, I pretty much tried to dress like this. Get the look at ModCloth with these cute picks:

1. Rock Shop Dress,  2. Follow the Cedar Boot, 3. Season Change is Good Scarf

Goldie Hawn in Overboard killed it. Lounging at it’s most glamorous. Before she loses her memory, Goldie’s character struts around in very unusually cut swimsuits. (I am talking side-less thong one-pieces here people!) Every suit had a matching, flowing cover-up, and amazing accessories. The best thing in the whole movie for you fashionistas has got to be the rotating shoe closet. I need that in my life so badly.

When spring’s around the corner, a woman’s mind turns to thoughts of bonkers patterns and bright colors, like the ones in this Tropicalia-vibe dress. I’d wear it with opaque burgundy tights until the weather warms up, then with platform sandals and some doorknocker earrings when the temps get above 75. Required soundtrack: anything by Os Mutantes.

I watched What a Way to Go! on a recommendation from Rose McGowan (oops, sorry, didn’t mean to DROP that NAME on you), who flipped over its ridiculous sets and costumes. The lady has good taste. This flick is full of spectacular scenery, but it’s also a showcase for a young and spunky Shirley MacLaine, a national treasure and a proto-BUST girl. Though I’m not lucky enough to live in an all-pink celluloid world, at least I can steal a bit of Shirl’s Old Hollywood glamour with these specs.

I’ve had the cover to my favorite album, Patti Smith’s 1975 release Horses, up on my wall for years as a reminder of the kind of effortless cool I’ve always wanted to achieve. Skinny black jeans, plain white shirt, shaggy hair, no makeup, an expression of placid intensity—nobody does it better than Patti.

Unfortunately, when the BUST gals get to gabbing about the latest episodes of their favorite TV shows, I can rarely join in. That’s because whenever I have spare time for vegging out in front of the boob tube, I’m usually gobbling up whole seasons of my favorite soap—Dark Shadows. A campy supernatural drama that ran from 1966 to 1971, Shads (as I affectionately call it), was recently revived on film by Tim Burton and Johnny Depp. But the orig is still my fave, and available on Netflix!

Jonathan Demme’s 1986 flick Something Wild blew my mind when I first watched it as a teen. The plot and the acting are both solid—how YOU doin’ Young Ray Liotta?—but I was most fixated on Melanie Griffith’s character, Lulu, a free-spirited part-time criminal with perfect fashion sense and impeccable taste in music. If she were real (Lulu, please come to life and whisk me off in your insane car!), she’d load up on wrist candy like this to complete her arty downtown look:

1. Apex of Style Bracelet, 2. The Bright Angle Bracelet , 3. Refined Rocker Bracelet
