Back pain approaching year two

Six days after my last epidural ( #5) and the pain is creeping back in. At least I felt some real relief for about 48 hours. I was really hoping this last epidural would give me some lasting relief. I will have dealt with this pain from my herniated disc (L5/ S1) for about a year now in October 2013. My primary care doctor says after about a year I should start feeling relief. As much as I’d like to believe him, I do not feel as positive. I’m being referred to a new specialist/surgeon for a 2nd opinion. I’m hoping he will paint a more realistic picture of what I can expect going into year two of this intrusive, distracting and sometimes debilitating pain. I’ll be 35 in a little over a month. This is not how I planned on spending my mid- thirties or my first year of marriage. Hoping year two brings real healing and pain relief. I’d really like to get on with my life.

Stretch it out: Lower back

Here’s a few stretches that will help you loosen up those tight muscles & give you a flexible feel with any exercise that you attempt. I recommend doing this everyday, even if you don’t work out. Get into the habit of this & you will dodge back pain!

1. The Butterfly Stretch

This stretch is definitely one of the most easiest & simplest way to relieve back pain. I normally start out with something as basic as this and work my way down the stretch list. Make sure to count when you’re breathing. Inhale for four counts and exhale for the next four.

2. Pigeon Stretch

This stretch is one of my favorites! I learned how to do this when I took Yoga for the first time! Not only is it good for the back, but it also stretches out a number of other muscles. One of the best stretches for me if  I am going on a long run (usually 3-6 miles).

3. Double Pigeon Stretch

This stretch is very  efficient for your hips & your inner thighs. It’s easy to get to this form from the butterfly. It’s important to keep your back straight throughout all these stretches. It is more effective with proper breathing as well.

4. Seated lover back stretch

I love doing this stretch because you can basically do it anywhere without having to get down on all fours. It’s important to crouch your back properly, each vertebrae at a time. & be patient! Many people fly through their stretches & never give their bodies enough time to absorb the action that is being done.

The pain associated with a pinched nerve is primarily due to a compressed nerve. Nerves run throughout our bodies that are connected to the brain by our spinal cord. However, when the nerve is compressed, it results in numbness, a tingling feeling and/or a burning sensation. When the nerve is compressed, the brain is not able to send or receive messages which is why we feel pain. This is our body’s way of telling us that something is wrong and needs to be addressed.

Best part of hearing the #storm nearing my house? That I’m tucked in #bed with great movies to watch and all my #pain relieving #medications. The #lightening is scary but then I remember I #battle my #autoimmune #disease every single day!

One admission was from a sudden attack of acute Chronic Pain on my way into work, and the other was from an admission of me trying to end that chronic pain. Trying to end my pain resulted in me waking up in #ICU and almost causing my family a lifetime of pain just before Christmas. It’s not worth it, and I’ve realised the #pain has made me strong. I have an #illness with no cure but a lifelong #treatment of Meds. I’m #grateful I don’t have #disfigurement, that I still work a full time job as an #Anaesthetic #Nurse, and am a single parent with 3 wonderful kids that are grateful to have me no matter what.

Wishing all my fellow #Spoonies a good night and hope those who are just getting up have the best day you can possibly have. To those going to attempt to #sleep here’s hoping we are successful. Be #gentle with yourself and know we know our struggles and don’t need anybody to #judge us. Those that do couldn’t handle a day in our shoes even if they tried! God knows I’ve been accused as being lazy by somebody despite knowing what I suffered. Perhaps she needed to really do a bit more reading before judging!
