Pharoah Sanders - Summun Bukmun Umyun
Sanders is a saxophone player and bandleader who had played with John Coltrane. In the late 60s and early 70s, Sanders created a series of albums that explored a jazzy, groove-based approach that sometimes veered into free jazz.
I saw this album at Horses records but didn’t buy it, not knowing what this particular one sounded like. However, once I got to a computer and checked out its two lengthy side-long tracks, I realized what I’d missed. It’s a joyful, fun listen, with interesting rhythmic instrumentation, and an explosion of horns or a simple bass groove.
Nice music to wake up and listen to today.
