• This is Ethan McCord, the soldier shown rescuing children out of the van in the Collateral Murder video revealed by Bradley Manning via WikiLeaks. After the video was released, Ethan became an antiwar activist. As Bradley has inspired other soldiers to speak out against injustices, hopefully he will inspire you to take action in his defense. It was not until I was in Iraq and reading secret military reports on a daily basis that I started to question the morality of what we were doing. It was at this time I realized in our efforts to meet this risk posed to us by the enemy, we have forgotten our humanity. We consciously elected to devalue human life both in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Bradley Manning in a statement after sentencing today

Dylan Ratigan:  President Obama, hit with a question about the treatment of PFC Bradley Manning, who is accused of stealing and leaking Government Documents.  Manning as you may know by now, has been held for many, many months at this point, confined to his cell for 23 hours a day by himself - they don’t call it “Solitary Confinement” because he gets that one hour.  He has been forced to strip naked at night and stand nude at attention in the morning, because apparently he is a threat to himself, although that is entirely up for debate.  Ultimately, the treatment of Private Manning, who has yet to be brought to trial, is prompting some questions that are now making it up to the President:

Jake Tapper (ABC News):  The State Department spokesman, P. J. Crowley, has said that the treatment of Bradley Manning by the Pentagon is ridiculous, and counter-productive and stupid, and I’m wondering if you agree with that.

President Obama:  I can’t go into details about some of their concerns, but some of this has to do with Private Manning’s safety as well.

Dylan Ratigan:  If George W Bush was treating Bradley Manning the way he is being treated, would the left roll over the way that they have and be silent?

Crystal Ball (D) Former Congressional Candidate: Absolutely not, absolutely not, and I agree with P.J. Crowley, the treatment is ridiculous, and it’s indefensible.

Dylan Ratigan: But there is a bigger issue here, because the political machine has been immobilized, because it is a Liberal, Black, Democratic President who is in charge, that the Left, by my opinion, does not want to criticize, even though he is exhibiting behavior that were it to be a Right Wing, older white man, the left would be holding vigils.

Amy Holmes (R) Radio Host: I couldn’t agree with you more.  We’ve seen enormous hypocrisy on the left - we’re seeing it with Gitmo.  President Obama has said he was going to keep that open, and that was a central campaign promise of President Obama, was to close Gitmo - we had that signing on his second day in office, and we’re not hearing a peep from the Left.

Crystal Ball (D) Former Congressional Candidate: The thing is, that we’ve seen this partisan divide on both sides.  Everybody molds the framework to fit their side.

Dylan Ratigan: But what I am saying is we’ve got a man right now who is being held in what I view as “Solitary Confinement” who has not been tried, where there is clear evidence, I don’t know, but we’ve talked to a string of JAGs who do this, where there is clear violation of multiple codes of the Uniform Code of Military Conduct and the way this man is being treated, and the political base that would normally be so active in defending this man is silent.

Crystal Ball (D) Former Congressional Candidate: The only people that you hear on the Left are sort of at the extreme, the normal Democratic base is not speaking out on this issue.

Dylan Ratigan:  The Uniform Code of Military Justice explicitly says that an inmate must be held with the “necessary security” to protect him or others, and NOTHING MORE!

Amy Holmes (R) Radio Host: Dylan, where I might disagree with you here,  is that I don’t think that they’re holding him there as punishment, they do say that they are trying to protect him from himself, we hear President Obama saying that…

Dylan Ratigan:  There is no evidence..that’s, that’s GARBAGE!  There’s no evidence from Bradley Manning, there’s no evidence from Bradley Manning’s lawyer, there’s no evidence from Bradley Manning’s friends, there’s no evidence from anybody anywhere near Bradley Manning that Bradley Manning is in any way a threat to himself.

Amy Holmes (R) Radio Host: Well, I can’t imagine then, where the government is getting this information and the President of the United States is saying this, HIMSELF, in a press conference.

Dylan Ratigan:  I will tell you explicitly what occurred was, Bradley Manning joked with a Security Guard, saying, “What, am I gonna kill myself with my flip flops and my underwear?” and then the guard said, “Not any more,’cause now you’re going to be naked.”

Crystal Ball (D) Former Congressional Candidate: Look, as a private citizen, if we were in an airport and made the wrong sarcastic comment we could potentially be…

Dylan Ratigan:  Okay, for sure, stupid, definitely stupid on his part.

Crystal Ball (D) Former Congressional Candidate: Yes, but Solitary Confinement, 23 hours, it’s not justifiable.

Dylan Ratigan:  I just love how we like to criticize Egypt and China for their treatment of political prisoners, holding people, they don’t try them, they abuse them, and yet, we take somebody, we don’t try him, we hold him for months, and those who would be so critical on the Left, say absolutely nothing as we abuse one of our own citizens in a way that we would be so anxious to criticize in China or the MIddle East.

Crystal Ball (D) Former Congressional Candidate: If you look at Huff Post you will see some Op-Eds speaking out on behalf of Manning.

Dylan Ratigan:  I totally agree, listen, FireDogLake has done an amazing job, Glenn Greenwald (from salon.com) has done an amazing job*, but the organized power base that IS the center left, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, the people with the money and the power, SILENT!

Amy Holmes (R) Radio Host: Silent, Obama’s their guy.

Dylan Ratigan:  Silent.  OBAMA, silent…until he was asked by Jake Tapper, go Jake.

Manning acquitted of aiding the enemy

A military judge has acquitted former US intelligence analyst Bradley Manning of the most serious charge against him, aiding the enemy, but convicted him of espionage, theft and computer fraud charges for giving thousands of classified secrets to the anti-secrecy site WikiLeaks.

He faces a maximum sentence up to 136 years. His sentencing hearing is set to begin on Wednesday.

My most recent epiphany: MSNBC IS NOT ALL ITS CRACKED UP TO BE

After all, it IS owned by big corporations, previously GE and now Comcast.

I used to think I was getting a good portion of “Liberal” views, and daily political news from MSNBC.  I mean, they claim to be “The Place for Politics”.  Then I started watching Amy Goodman’s Democracy Now, and reading online blogs like Think Progress, the OpEd News and many others, as well as reading the UK papers online and that was when I realized that MSNBC is really just an arm of the American Propaganda Machine, called Cable News.  If you think MSNBC covers all the news you need to know, then please check out my ever-growing list of items I have not seen covered at all..Please let me know if I’m wrong and you have seen coverage of one of my topics, or if I’ve missed anything on my list of:

Things that (the bastion of liberal politics) MSNBC, has decided we don’t need to know:

1) There’s immense civil unrest in Syria, at least as large as the Egyptian revolution which received massive US media attention a few months back, but Syria is not allowing foreign journalists in, ergo, as far as the U.S. is concerned, the revolution does not exist.

2) The Egyptians are once again gathering for huge rallies, this time against the Military that took over after Mubarak’s fall, but we haven’t seen any of it.

3) Spain is having massive rallies against their regime, but no coverage for us.

4) There are many, many revolutions taking place throughout the region, in the Arab Spring, but we get no coverage about it at all, now.

5) Julian Assange won the prestigious Sydney Peace Award for Transparency in Journalism, however it was not reported.

6) I have especially noticed that Rachel Maddow will not TOUCH the Julian Assange/Whistleblower story AT ALL.  What’s up with that?

7) All coverage of the Japanese Nuclear Disaster has been suspended.

8) No coverage of the monitoring of the radiation in the U.S.  In fact, the EPA turned the Fresno, CA RADIATION MONITORS OFF on MARCH 16th, however this was never even reported.  I guess they figure, if they don’t cover something, it will go away.

9) Bradley Manning is a Civil Rights hero, though many of MSNBC’s guests, from both sides of the aisle, have proclaimed and all AGREED that Manning is a Traitor.  On The Dylan Ratigan show recently, one of MSNBC’s most “liberal” talk shows, Jimmy Williams, Senior Denton LLP, “Washington Insider” and Democratic Lobbyist, said the following: “Look, it’s simple.  If Manning did what he did, they ought to try him, and they ought to put his ass before a firing squad, and light him up, because it’s treason, he’s a traitor.”]  This statement was not objected to or disputed by any of the other three panelists, Karen Finney (Democratic Strategist), Matt Miller (Left-leaning Substitute Host), and Republican Strategist, Susan Del Percio.

10) President Obama, who is a Constitutional Scholar has brushed off questions about Bradley Manning’s treatment saying that it was merited because “Bradley Manning is guilty”, although Manning has never been tried, and Obama’s statement, itself, goes against our cherished rule of “Innocent until proven guilty”.

11) The Patriot Act renewal was barely contested, and many parts of it violate our Civil Rights and are totally illegal.  Imagine if our news media made a big deal about this?  Imagine if they got the populace all fired up about this?  Would The Patriotic Act renewal have been able to pass so quietly?

12) President Obama has prosecuted more whistleblowers in two years than all the Presidents in the preceding last 40 years.

13) The White House censored nearly 200 pages of internal emails about their efforts to make government more transparent.

14) On March 30, 2011 Obama quietly accepted a Transparency in Government Award IN SECRET!!  OH, the irony.

15) President Obama has actually cracked down on Marijuana users, and Marijuana dispensaries throughout the country, while publicly saying that the Feds would lay off.

16) President Obama has secretly escalated attacks in Pakistan, Yemen and other countries.

17) White House officials meet with lobbyists across the street from the White House so they don’t have to disclose they’re meeting with lobbyists (actually, I’m not absolutely sure about this one, MSNBC might have made mention of this at some point).

18) MSNBC runs ads all day long by Exxon Mobil for “Natural Gas”, an ad which makes false claims about the ecological benefits of Natural Gas, with no mention of the horrid consequences of fracking.  This is a complete betrayal to the Green movement, that MSNBC’s audience supports.

All these things we did NOT need to know…yet MSNBC has decided we DO need to know intimate details about Charlie Sheen, Ashton Kutcher, Lady Gaga, Lindsay Lohan, Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Royal Wedding, Casey Anthony, a constant stream of non-political, salacious fluff pieces, that I, myself, could care less about, but these non-political news stories are what “The Place for Politics” chooses to report.

I admit, I keep my T.V. tuned to MSNBC most of the day, however, it is often on “mute”…so maybe some items on my list HAVE actually been reported, and I just don’t know it…but I tend to doubt it.  However, I welcome any corrections you might have.  I also welcome submissions of any other incidences you might know of that demonstrate MSNBC’s gross negligence in omitting coverage of certain “politically sensitive” important stories.

But, what do you think?  Do you feel that watching MSNBC will keep you informed of ALL the news that a responsible progressive citizen needs to know?

Bradley Manning protest in Minnesota

There’s been a large response (views, repostings, retweets) to our photos of a couple dozen protesters supporting Bradley Manning in Minnesota. These rainy day photos have drawn more interest than photos of other events with hundreds of participants. There seems to be a motivated base of online support for this issue.

ON PBS’ FRONTLINE TONIGHT:  WikiSecrets (check your local listings)

excerpt from Frontline’s Article, revealing Manning’s Facebook Page

"WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has become internationally recognized since the publication last year of thousands of secret U.S. documents. But Bradley Manning, the Army private alleged to have provided the documents, remains largely a mystery.

Who is Bradley Manning? How did he come into contact with a trove of secrets and, allegedly, with WikiLeaks? And what might have motivated the largest leak of classified information in American history? Investigating those questions for tonight’s film WikiSecrets — check local listings —

FRONTLINE sought to understand Manning through extensive interviews with his father, friends and others he confided in during the months before his arrest. FRONTLINE also obtained access to Manning’s Facebook account.

Manning’s Facebook postings are a vivid, if partial, portrait of his life in the military and of the political and social issues that he followed closely. They reflect his commitment to gay rights and defiance of the military’s ban on openly gay or lesbian soldiers. They track the anguish in his personal life. And they conclude with an entry, put up in Manning’s name by his aunt, explaining his arrest with a link to a WikiLeaks website.

The following presentation is an edited version of Manning’s wall, annotated by FRONTLINE, beginning when he opened the account in July 2007 and concluding in June 2010. It includes only posts authored by Manning (with the exception of the first, from his aunt) — status updates, articles, pictures and “likes” — and the responses of his Facebook friends. We have blurred the identities of those other than Manning posting comments or in pictures, as well as the names of people mentioned in the posts, with the exception of public figures and in several cases Manning’s ex-boyfriend Tyler Watkins.”
