9.1.13 - “I was a great talker as a boy" (featuring Stephen Hawking and Sue Lawley)

31 Days in January: my 9th tune is a little longer than my others, but i hope you’ll agree its worth it - for Sue and Stephen’s contributions mainly…. happy birthday Mr Hawking for yesterday…

2.1.13 "look after the chocolate pennies and the chocolate pounds will look after themselves." (solo piano)

31 Days in January: This month I have set myself the challenge of creating, recording and sharing a piece of music everyday. I guess its a resolution of sorts - to give my creative practice some extra momentum and hopefully to improve my producing skills too. There should be plenty of variety as the January progresses - I’m thinking about it lots, but I am trying to create things from scratch each day.

22.1.13 - "Connection" - my first cover! i’ve not played it before, so its still kind of “new” music every day. always liked Elastica…

18.1.13 - "tell me again, not in morse code" (featuring the HIllary Step Sax Quartet)

today’s piece was recorded at a rehearsal with the sax quartet. i took the chords from from day 7’s “i am not The” and day 10’s “tell me in morse code and quickly arranged them for the 4 saxes, then we clicked “record”.

you can hear more from the HSQ  here
and we are performing at the Manchester Art Gallery thursday 24th January 7.30pm onwards.

17.1.13 - “me and Bert rock the mic” (Albert Arthur Lenton, aged 2 years and 7 months.

not much time today to compose in the normal way, but bert and i had some fun this afternoon. he’s been dying to get on the mic recently! we have always been amazed by how much bert loves music and dancing. he has a great sense of rhythm. Right at the beginning of this track bert plays the verse from “bob the builder” on the mouthpiece of a broken tenor recorder (we lost the rest of it), then when i start playing the thumb piano he joins in instantly. i only noticed he was playing that tune afterwards when i listened back. indulge me - he’s a genius!

14.1.13 "nobody knows how cold my toes" -

so this guitar part has been plaguing my friends and family for years. and the melody has been in my head for a while too. so this is really cheating now. its not in any way composed today. but, on the days i am only able to start work at 9pm, it seems silly to neglect pieces that i have inside, - that have never found a home (or at least never been recorded…) hope you like it.

11.1.31: “ I don’t need that”- the guitar chords are from something i have played before today. i know i know. but the rest of it is all fresh, i promise.

1.1.13: “bring home the corn” (solo sax) - I thought I should start simple and get back to the heart of things.

26.1.31 - "poetry and music (burns night special)"

another field recording, this time from stuart and sean and paul’s burns night at dunken’s house. Fantastic as always: good food, good words (and a little music). and a wee dram…. we pressed record at 23:57 - just so a could catch something on the 26th. naughty but there you go.

12.1.13 - “go down deep" (a cappella voices)

this piece is in response to a piece of music i have loved for many years: “Proverb” by Steve Reich. the words are those of Wittgenstein (pictured) and are taken from the same paragraph in his writings as are the words from Reich’s piece. All sounds a bit la di dah i’m sure, but Reich’s piece had a massive affect on me. i have not added any effects on the voices, they are naked and that’s that. (there are 2 echo voices set back in the margins of the mix, but again these are bare.)

10.1.13 - “tell me in morse code" -

31 Days in January: 10 tunes done! i’m really happy with this one. inside it are 2 pianos (one in each ear, slightly out of phase) - if i have managed to get it right their rhythm spells “I am” in morse code. its a vague reference to my previous tune: “i am not The”, which is based on the same chords. lovely.
