Thank you for this, it’s
Acting!Kaneki is something
I’ve wanted to do for a while, but I wasn’t quite sure where to start.
I have no idea why, but
when I received this message, I had a massive urge to write Romeo and Juliet
into it… probably because these two are so damn adorable.
Title – Shakespeare’s
Pairing – Hidekane
Contains – A very well
performed scene from 14-year-old Kaneki, shocked Hide!
Classmates gathered into
the large auditorium, lining up to take seats on the first row. Today was the
day; Kaneki would be performing his lines in front of class for the first time.
It wasn’t ideal that his
drama partner was sick with the flu on the particular day, of all days. What made
matters even worse was the fact Hide was in her place, he never took drama
A rather anxious Kaneki
stood at the side of the stage, taking his last few minutes to go over lines with
Hide. Inside he was praying, praying that the blond didn’t make this anymore
humiliating that it already was.
Just watching Kaneki stutter
out his lines made Hide grin, the way he stared keenly at the script was
priceless. This was indeed very much outside Kaneki’s comfort zone, so he felt
obliged to try making it easier on him.
“Kaneki-kun,” the teachers’
voice echoed through the large room, as if bouncing off of each wall. “It’s
time for you to perform~!” She sung with enthusiasm, sitting down at the far
side of the stage.
“Oh boy,” Kaneki muttered
while he and Hide climbed the few steps leading up, placing themselves dead
centre in the blinding glow of the spotlight. This would be his first
performance without script in hand, and all that crossed his mind was messing
A look of embarrassment
was obvious on Kaneki’s face, as a group of girls in the audience started
chanting their names like a love spell.
Just how would this end
“Whenever you’re ready,”
the teacher said graciously, nodding her head at the signs of his perceptible nerves.
With one extended sigh, Kaneki
placed himself in position and looked up, grabbing Hide’s hand with
temperate fingers, Hide was trying his absolute hardest not to laugh.
“If I profane with my unworthiest
hand this holy shrine, the gentle fine is this: my lips,” Kaneki stepped
forward slowly “two blushing pilgrims, ready stand to smooth that rough touch
with a tender kiss,” he spoke each word almost perfectly, placing a good-natured
kiss on his friends knuckles.
Everyone fell silent in
their seats, you could practically hear their chorus of hushed gasps- along
with the teasing squeals of girls that watched. Hide was stunned. He never
imagined Kaneki to be so… at ease, it was incredible to watch. He was virtually
a different person.
“Good pilgrim, you do
wrong your hand too much,” Hide stated with a look of amazement on his face, “Which
mannerly devotion shows in this; for saints have hands that pilgrims’ hands do
touch, and palm to palm is, uh…” Hide stopped, forgetting his line briefly. “Oh… holy palmers’ kiss!”
Kaneki cringed at Hide’s
attempt of acting, yet he carried on- pulling Hide towards him. “Have not
saints lips, and holy palmers too?” The words roll off of his tongue effortlessly,
making him feel that perhaps he didn’t need to be so nervous.
Staring starry-eyed at his
friend, Hide forgot he had to speak. The whole show was so brilliant on Kaneki’s
part, that he simply lost all focus.
“Hide, it’s your line…”
Kaneki whispered, nudging him in the ribs.
With startled eyes, Hide
snapped back to reality and turned his head away, “Ay, pilgrim, lips they must
use in prayer.”
“O, then, dear saint, let
lips do what hands do; they pray, grant thou, lest faith turn to despair.” With
Hide’s hand in his, he stepped back and took the sunflower with him- by now he
was officially Romeo.
Hide raised an eyebrow,
gradually turning his head away, “Saint do not move, though grant for prayers’
“Then move not, while my
prayer’s effect I take…”
Both of them leaned in,
just as the spotlight went out- the room fell silent.
The dark haired boy let go
of Hide’s clammy hand, the amount of relief rushing through his body could not be explained.
But little did he know, this was only the beginning of a very long line of remarks and rumors.
The central lights came
back on, all that met their eyes was their fellow classmates whispering to each
other, causing Hide’s ears to burn red hot and Kaneki to get incredibly
Even though neither of
them knew what the whispers were about, they had had pretty good idea.
For weeks and weeks after
that mortifying day, everywhere Kaneki went with Hide, they would be teased endlessly about how they made such a cute couple.
Yet, each time it
happened, Hide would always pat his best friend on the back, following with “Don’t
worry man, I’ll always be your number one fan!”
