“These new Pro Visionary Brushes are an extension of our Pro Brushes. These are top-notch quality, right at that professional level—we think they’re the best in the market,” says Sephora Chief Merchant Margarita Arriagada, playing with a Sephora Collection Pro Visionary Fan Brush. “These are specialty brushes for the beauty aficionado. They’re ergonomic, so great in terms of hold and control and ease of use, but these are primarily for precision and skill. They have DuPont synthetic hair, which can grab more product and provide more precision—that’s part of the innovation. We converted to these little flip caps a little while ago, and I love them. I don’t think having your brushes exposed [in a bathroom] is very hygienic. I keep mine in a train case, but some are too beautiful to hide!”

“Look at this! They’re luscious!” says Sephora Chief Merchant Margarita Arriagada, holding a couple of Josie Maran’s new Cheek Gelées. “This reminds me of the first lip gloss I used when I was young, but that was really thick and these are sheer. First and foremost are the bright colors, but they’re transparent when applied. I love the whole coconut water story in addition to the Argan oil story, I think it’s a great use of the ingredient—it’s cooling and hydrating. It’s a real stain, but it’s really soft and blendable.

“My eyebrow pencil comes off all the time. I plucked too much in the past, so I have to fill them in. Long-wear, smudge-proof brow pencil feels intuitive,” says Sephora Head Merchant Margarita Arriagada of the new kit from Anastasia. “The brow category is hot, and has been hot, and thicker brows give a more youthful look. Anastasia’s view has always been that if you frame your brows right, whether thick brows are in fashion or not, it’s like an eye lift. I’ve had mine reshaped, and then had people ask if I’ve had something done!”

“What a phenomenon, right?” says Sephora Chief Merchant Margarita Arriagada of the double-letter cream explosion. “Smashbox really got it right with their BB, and the CC is a natural progression. Our clients have a lot of trust in Smashbox because of their primer. They were among the first out of the gate in prestige. For girls who don’t want to wear foundation, this is perfect. It gives you a little more than a tinted moisturizer. Now that the dust is starting to settle about BBs and CCs and we’re starting to see the formulations there’s definitely more of a treatment aspect to the CCs, and a treatment of discoloration specific to Camera Ready. The fact that you can immediately cover, whether it’s your acne spots or sun spots, and then treat them is a big deal.”

“We’ve never had a product like [Bliss Fuzz Off] before, and this thing works,” reports Sephora Chief Merchant Margarita Arriagada. “I had a friend try it, and she loved it. It wasn’t out yet, so I only had a sample. It took the hair off, it’s soothing with vitamin E, has a great scent, and the application is great—you don’t have to touch it with your hands to remove it.”

“Mascara brushes are a really personal thing,” says Sephora Chief Merchant Margarita Arriagada, twisting open Dior’s new Diorshow Iconic Overcurl Mascara. “I don’t have a ton of lashes, so for me the precision of a wand that hugs the lashes is really the cool thing. And it’s not at the sacrifice of volume. I’m wearing it now. It’s not a tight curl, but it definitely lifts more than classic Diorshow. It’s the marriage of the brush and the formula. We’re going to see curling become a much bigger deal in mascara. We just got back from Cosmoprof, and while nothing will ever take the place of volume in terms of what clients want, I was amazed how many manufacturers were talking about curling mascaras!”

“This is from Brazilian Peel, which was a great innovative product we launched that came from nowhere,” says Sephora Chief Merchant Margarita Arriagada of Brazilian True Tan, the brand’s first effort since. “We think this dual-action delivery is pretty cool, where two different formulas come out at once that exfoliate, hydrate, and give color. Brands need to evolve the components and sensorial aspects of their products as much as their formulas. Brazilian True Tan gives great color and even coverage, and even the scent is luxurious—you smell the shea butter and jojoba. Self-tanner has evolved so much that it’s a sensorial experience.”
