The Great Pretenders
You pretend to be sweet and well-wishing,
but your words speak another language.
I may not always be all-forgiving,
for wisdom grows mightier with age.
I know you like the back of my hand;
the manipulative things you say.
But, you don’t realize I have a plan.
You didn’t think I would speak up anyway.
Looks like we’re both pretending;
for you are a sheep with a wolfish smile.
And I am a sheep just learning
to let her wolf come out and play a while.
Without a thought, I could banish you,
out of sight, completely out of mind.
Yes, sometimes I have to push back, too,
There’s no greater fury unleashed
than from a heart broken inside someone
who is truly, unconditionally kind.
