2015 Film Challenge #47: The Fox and the Hound (1981)

Dir. Ted Berman, Richard Rich, Art Stevens

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment

The Fox and the Hound is usually put at an immediate disadvantage as it is one of the many 1980s Disney films that are considered to be very average and are mostly forgotten in favour of the Renaissance-era films (although FATH is nowhere near the level of obscurity as other films such as Basil the Great Mouse Detective and The Black Cauldron) and during this era Disney was being consistently outperformed by Don Bluth’s studio.

Fox and the Hound is certainly not Disney’s strongest moment, but it certainly isn’t their weakest either. Centering around a pretty basic ‘enemies become friends’ storyline, the film is certainly very sweet and heartwarming and the character designs are all cute and loveable. One scene in particular is famous as one of the most emotional Disney moments and for good reason. The main thing that brings it down is the very predictable and formulaic nature of the film and it doesn’t bring original ideas into the fray like many other Disney films have done.

Special praise should be given to the voice acting, which is provided by a high-profile cast including Kurt Russell, Mickey Rooney and Pearl Bailey. The music is also of a particularly high quality.

Bob Chapek Replaces Tom Staggs as Chairman of Walt Disney Parks & Resorts

Disney announced today that Bob Chapek will  be replacing Tom Staggs as chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.

He will be replacing Staggs who was recently named chief operating officer of the Walt Disney Company and will most likely be replacing Iger when he retires in 2018.

Chapek has been with Disney for 22 years and was previously the president of Disney Consumer Products.  He was president of Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment before that.

“Bob is stepping into this role at an incredibly dynamic and exciting time for our Parks and Resorts business,” Staggs said. “The ongoing construction of Shanghai Disney Resort as well as the new ‘Avatar’-themed land at Walt Disney World continues an era of unprecedented growth and historic expansion.”

James Pitaro was also a rumored replacement for Staggs who currently heads Disney Interactive.
