Lifehack: if you go into the theaters with the mindset that books and movies are different forms of entertainment you’ll be a lot happier in life

“She was too quiet, or she was too loud. She took things too seriously, or not seriously at all. She was too sensitive, or too cold-hearted. She hated with every fiber of her being, or loved with every piece of her heart. There was no in-between for her. It was either all or nothing. She wanted everything but settled for nothing.”

I have to admit, this episode made me wish so damn hard that Derek would be able to shift into an actual wolf.

Because now we know it’s a rare thing. And I just want Derek to realize that he’s that rare and special, too. Just like his mother.

And I’m so close to 100% sure that the show will never let us have something like that.

Settle for Nothing

  • Rage Against the Machine

A jail cell is freedom from the pain in my home
Hatred passed on, passed on and passed on
A world of violent rage, but it’s one that I can recognize
Having never seen the color of my father’s eyes

Yes I dwell in hell, but it’s a hell that I can grip
I tried to grip my family, but I slipped
To escape from the pain and an existence mundane
I got a 9, a sign, a set and now I got a name

I mean just from the top of my head alone we have:

  • Haru being reflected in Rin’s eyes.
  • Rin being what fires Haru up - and now we have Rin doing this deliberately, outright making a point to Haru who can’t deny it.
  • Meeting in the lockers pre-race.
  • Rin grinning as he swims with Haru.
  • The patented tsun!Haru turn.
  • And most importantly, IMO: Haru looking up at the sky and seeing the bird. Remember episode 7? When Haru “lost” the “person he wanted to see”, aka Rin? That sequence ended with Haru looking up at the sky and there was a flying bird. Similarly, there is the time when Rin’s picture slipped through his fingers and Haru looked up at it as it flew away.

(gdi I wish I weren’t at univ so I can take caps to compare and contrast because it is GLORIOUS)

On-top of all those parallels, we also have a reminder that Rin has got his goals settled and that he is going to give it his all; that his goals are going to take him away from Iwatobi again. Add that to Rin’s obvious displeasure when he realizes that Haru and Makoto still don’t know what they want to do themselves, and it’s easy to see Rin will - again - be a driving force pushing Haru to decide what road to take.
