Scribblenauts Unmasked: A DC Comics Adventure Announced

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announces Scribblenauts Unmasked: A DC Comics Adventure, a new game that melds the boundless creativity of the award-winning video game franchise with thousands of DC Comics characters and objects across DC Comics worlds — all drawn in the classic Scribblenauts art style. Created and developed by 5TH Cell, the game will be available for the Wii U system, Nintendo 3DS hand-held system and PC in North and South America and Australia this fall.

Scribblenauts Unmasked features a story where players embark as protagonist Maxwell on an imaginative and comical quest, taking them through Gotham City, Metropolis, Atlantis and other iconic locales from the DC Comics universe. In the game, Maxwell comes to the aid of Batman, Superman and the rest of The Justice League as they face the mightiest DC Comics Super Villains, such as The Joker, Lex Luthor and Sinestro. Fueled by the player’s imagination, Maxwell must use his magic notebook to put a stop to the villains’ evil schemes and save the day!

Expanding on the video game franchise’s innovation, Scribblenauts Unmasked features for the first time dynamically created puzzles called Heroic Feats that increase the game’s replayability by continuously generating original scenarios requiring different solutions with each visit.

"Scribblenauts Unmasked includes action-packed missions with fan favorite DC Comics Super Heroes adding to the players’ puzzle solving experience as the beloved Maxwell," said Samantha Ryan, Senior Vice President, Production and Development, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. "Challenges in the game encourage broader player choices all set in well-known locations of the DC Comics universe, interacting in new and inventive ways with a wide range of popular DC Comics characters."

"Fans of both DC Comics and Scribblenauts can really let their imaginations run wild with the Super Hero Creator in Scribblenauts Unmasked," said Jeremiah Slaczka, C.E.O. and Creative Director of 5TH Cell. "Players will be challenged to craft new and never-before-seen characters such as Wonder Joker or Bane Lantern and use them to solve puzzles or share them with friends."

A new Super Hero Creator tool available on Wii U and PC elevates the game’s creativity by giving players the ability to produce their own Super Hero or Super Villain using any item from the DC Comics universe and then setting properties for how it behaves, changing its appearance and powers. Players can then share their creations with the community and download others.

SCRIBBLENAUTS UNMASKED - THE FIRST TWO HOURS

Earlier this week marked the launch of 5th Cell’s superhero sequel Scribblenauts Unmasked: A DC Comics Adventure which I have been eagerly waiting for since it’s initial announcement back in May. The game follows Maxwell and his sister Lily as they explore the DC Comic universe in a brand new adventure.

If you’ve played Scribblenauts (especially Scribblenauts Unlimited) you’re going to be familiar with most of the gameplay and instructions. The game staples of collecting Starites and character creation is much the same as well but with some excellent comic book tweaks.

My first comic book nerd out moment happened in the opening sequence when Maxwell and Lily landed in Gotham City and Lily hurt her leg and needed assistance. The game asked me to get her a doctor and the first thought that landed in my head was “Thomas Wayne”.

Sure enough as soon as I typed his name into the magic notebook…*POOF* there stood Thomas Wayne (see the screenshot at the bottom of the screens above) and he promptly helped Lily get on her feet.

I was impressed by seeing him appear and then when I clicked on him I saw a Batcomputer prompt which I then clicked and was given a whole profile and background on him.

This is where I lost most of my time upon discovering this delight for comic fans. The Batcomputer database is a treasure trove of comic data on over 2000 various heroes, villains and events in the DC Comic Universe.

Every click drove me further into rediscovering old favorites, forgotten tales and characters and even discovering new characters and comics. This serves as a great primer for new people getting into the DC Universe as well as providing tons of geeky familiarity for existing fans.

Another new comic twist added in Unmasked is Mr. Mxyzptlk who issues challenges to Maxwell occasionally that put players into tricky situations where you are handicapped (i.e. You can use a certain type of weapon or you can only use adjectives to solve puzzles, etc) that really push your brain to solve.

I’m impressed with this initial amount of depth in the game and I’m looking forward to seeing what else is in store beyond these first two hours.

Scribblenauts Unmasked: A DC Comics Adventure is available now from local retailers and online for the Nintendo Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. It’s also available for PC on Steam (You can also get the game at 25% off on Steam if you own Scribblenauts Unlimited until Sept. 29th).

Comicvine’s "Think You Can Stump Scribblenauts Unmasked?" video shows they have all versions of Cassandra Cain and Stephanie Brown at 22:00 onward along with the hosts commenting on how DC’s been ignoring their existence. And near the end they re-enact Damian’s death in Scibblenauts format, so heads up for Damian fans still not over that.
