Robin Van Persie will be dropped from United’s starting XI for Radamel Falcao[GETTY]
The new Red Devils boss snapped up the Monaco striker on a season-long loan, raising question marks over the former Arsenal man’s squad status.
Sir Alex Ferguson brought Van Persie to Old Trafford in 2012, with the striker leading the team to the Premier League title in his first season after topping the goal-scoring charts with 26 strikes in 38 games.
However, the 31-year-old failed to repeat his heroics last season, finding the back of the net just 12 times in 21 league appearances.
Despite leading the Netherlands to the World Cup semi-finals in Brazil, there are strong doubts over Van Persie’s long-term fitness, something the player strenuously denies.
Van Gaal is still trying to figure out a way to fit in all his new signings, but with just Falcao, Van Persie and Rooney as his only senior strikers, the ex-Bayern Munich and Barcelona chief is not willing to risk playing all three on the pitch at the same time.
The Dutchman is loathe to drop Rooney after naming him as skipper, and with Juan Mata set to retain his place in midfield alongside British record signing Angel Di Maria, Van Persie looks set to be pushed aside to make room for United’s new Colombian star.
