Getter-Robo

ALL MECHA FANS MUST HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF THE HOLY TRINITY.

MAZINGER Z! (MAJIIIIN GO!)

GETTER ROBO! (SWITCH ON!)

MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM! (GUNDAM! IKIMASSSUU!)

These three mecha series set the basics!

Super Robots!

Combiners!

Real Robots!

LET THEM BE BURNED INTO YOUR MEMORY! THEIR INFLUENCES EMBALMED IN YOUR HEARTS! ALWAYS GIVE PRAISE TO OUR HOLY TRINITY OF MECHA, FOR WITHOUT THEM, WE MAY HAVE HAD NAUGHT!

(Also Tetsujin 28, he’s super duper important too. Hard to classify, but just as important.)

Shin Getter Robo is probably my favourite giant robot design ever. It’s vicious and terrifying and powerful and monstrous, like some awesome vision of destruction somehow distilled into a tool for humanity to use. But, ultimately, its power doesn’t choose sides, and its might is something humanity can only briefly borrow before Shin Getter exceeds our capacity to harness it.

And it’s just a little thing, but my favourite part of the design is the eyes. It has pupils, hinting at the fact that it has a will of its own of some sort, that it’s more than just a machine, and tying into the Getter’s connection with organic life and evolution.
