Microsoft Brings Games to E3

Making up for their widely perceived missteps from the Xbox One’s reveal event last month, Microsoft showed up at their E3 press conferences with a lot of gaming announcements. From games for both 360 and Xbox One to new Xbox Live features and a release window and price.

First and foremost, you will be able to play Xbox One in November 2013 in a singular SKU, priced at $499. (Ouch.)

Microsoft made a point to show that the Xbox 360 is still alive, showing off a new redesigned model that looks similar to the Xbox One’s design (That is allegedly available today!!). They also highlighted three new games coming to the 360 in the next year.

  • World of Tanks: Xbox 360 Edition

  • Max: The Curse of Brotherhood (A cutely haunting platformer announced back in March)

  • Dark Souls 2 (Coming March 2014)

For the Xbox One, Microsoft showed a lot of games, some exclusive, some crossplatform. But nonetheless, they filled the void left by last months presentation. The games shown in the conference include:

  • Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain – The new, open world installment in the stealth franchise (Multi-platform)

  • Ryse: Son of Rome - A gorgeous third-person action game by Crytek (Launch title/Exclusive)

  • Killer Instinct - A new installment in the long dormant fighting franchise from Rare (Coming 2013/Exclusive)

  • Sunset Overdrive – A new open world (MMO?) stylized shooter from Insomniac Studios (Exclusive)

  • Forza Motorsport 5 (Exclusive/Launch)

  • Minecraft: Xbox One Edition (Exclusive)

  • Quantum Break (Exclusive)

  • D4 – An episodic murder mystery title from Swery65 and Microsoft Game Studios that seemingly is a Kinect title (Exclusive)

  • Project Spark – A game creator, akin to LittleBigPlanet, that allows gamers to create impressive, stylized 3D worlds with Smart Glass and Kinect and play in a action-platformer gameplay style. (Exclusive)

  • Crimson Dragon – A new aerial dragon combat game from the creators of Panzer Dragoon

  • Dead Rising 3 – A new, grittier, open-world installment in the zombie franchise (Holiday 2013/Exclusive)

  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

  • Battlefield 4

  • Below – A new “rogue-like” dungeon crawler from the creators of Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery (Exclusive)

  • Titanfall – the amazing looking, mech-filled FPS from Respawn Entertainment (from the team that was formerly Infinity Ward) (Spring 2014)

Microsoft also showed trailers for next year’s Halo release and an untitled game from first-party studio Black Tusk. In case you weren’t counting, that’s a lot of games.

On the Xbox Live front, Microsoft also had a bit of news and details to share.

  • Now on Xbox Live, you can compare in-game stats and progress between you and your friends on both your Xbox One and Smart Glass.

  • Also, while playing a single player game, you can set up xbox live to load matchmaking for a multiplayer match in a separate game. Microsoft showed a person playing Ryse, with a Live notification saying that a match has been found in Killer Instinct and prompted the user to pop immediately into the match.

  • Upload Studio was also announced. Upload Studio is Xbox One’s game footage system that allows you to record, save, record commentary, and edit gameplay videos, as well as broadcast your games live through Twitch.

  • Microsoft Points are no more, as Microsoft is going to use real world currency as the monetary basis for Xbox Live.

  • Although Microsoft was vague, it was suggested that friends lists will have no limit, allowing you to add all of the friends you want.

  • Microsoft announced Family Gold Membership Sharing, which allows for one Gold membership to apply to all of your family members that are linked to your Xbox Live account.

Microsoft packed a lot into their hour and a half press conference. But was it enough for all of you to make up for last month? Does the price tag outweigh the content? Be sure to check back to VGN for more news and details about Microsoft, Xbox One, and all these games, as well as all of the other news that comes out of E3 over the next few days.
