One last mixtape before the year’s end. Usually at this time of year we are under multiple feet of snow and the mercury regularly plunges to -30 degrees Celsius. However, at the moment it is 0 with almost no snow on the ground. Everyone around town keeps glancing at the forecast wondering how long our good fortune is going to last - but you know deep-down everyone wants a white Christmas. Hooray global warming?

The Visit (2015)

Writer/director/producer M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense, Signs, Unbreakable) and producer Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity, The Purge and Insidious series) welcome you to Universal Pictures’ The Visit. Shyamalan returns to his roots with the terrifying story of a brother and sister who are sent to their grandparents’ remote Pennsylvania farm for a weeklong trip. Once the children discover that the elderly couple is involved in something deeply disturbing, they see their chances of getting back home are growing smaller every day.

A few random facts: 1) The photo this mix’s cover is based on is from a talented photographer named Erwin Olaf. 2) ’Moonwalking With Einstein’ by Josh Foer and ’Ready Player One’ by Ernest Cline are amazing books. If you consider yourself even mildly geeky, check'em out. 3) There is always a new music “drought” around the new year. 4) The world needs more spontaneous high-fives.

GRC: The More Things Change...

Global Rallycross media day was today in Long Beach, and was surprisingly bereft of major surprises. The biggest change on-track was the announcement that race-winner Patrik Sandell will be driving for Bryan Herta Rally Sport (last year’s Barracuda Racing, reverting to its original name with the conclusion of that partnership) alongside Austin Dyne, whose car takes on a neon-tinged variation of the familiar red-and-green of Castrol motor oil:

The full-time rides (so far) are mostly unchanged, yet drastically different. The only driver confirmed to not be coming back is Emma Gilmour, who has returned to New Zealand (the fate of Rhys Millen, without Hyundai backing for the first time since entering rallycross, is unclear outside of a Lights ride for Jackie Heinricher and an assumption that Millen will be back in Supercars somehow). With Sandell moving to Herta and Steve Arpin already announced at Chip Ganassi’s new team, this merely serves to whittle the Olsbergs MSE operation down to a formidable two-car effort of defending champion Joni Wiman and defending Lights champion Mitchell DeJong.

Everyone else is unchanged: Speed and Foust with Volkswagen-Andretti, Isachsen and Lasek with Subaru (and a new WRX that has drawn praise from former European champion Isachsen), the individual Fords of Ken Block and Nelson Piquet Jr. Something pointed out by series media guy Chris Leone: the series now has four Indy 500-winning team owners; to add, those owners are responsible for eight of the last 10 faces on the Borg-Warner Trophy. The other two? Sam Hornish Jr. and Helio Castroneves, driving for Roger Penske. Maybe the Captain should come on board?

Wouldn’t be the first Chevy–but, no offense to Moro or Burgess, a Penske Sonic would be a lot more competitive

As far as off-track items, continuity and growth were the main themes: besides the new owners and expanding teams, Red Bull has extended their support of the series through 2017, NBC will be splitting off the Lights races onto their own 30-minute block, and GRC will be on eight other networks taking the series into Canada, Europe, Latin America, and Oceania.

Things I was surprised to not hear: anything as far as new teams (Herta is being billed as a new team, but, again, last season it was Barracuda Racing, so it’s just a rebranding as the deal with Barracuda Networks has expired. I hope for their sake minor league hockey is suddenly a better investment!). Again, no official word if Rhys Millen will be back in Supercars, or what he will be driving. Also, continuing curiosity as far as whether we will see the Mini stateside–during FIA Rallycross media day earlier in the week it was announced that, while still trying to finalize a car for Guerlain Chicherit, they would be running Dave Mirra and Danny Way at Hockenheim as a “special Team USRX appearance”. But then we’ve still got a month and a half til Bahia Mar.

Speaking of which, I am still slogging around this whole crowdfunding thing–stuff at home has gotten in the way of me really working on promoting, but I’d say I’m about 1/10 along on the actual book. This is really quite impressive when you figure the thing I’m writing about–the 2015 Red Bull Global Rallycross season–hasn’t happened yet. For now though I’m really just wanting to get enough scrounged up to hit Fort Lauderdale and Austin without having to spend my own money, but I’m well short of that with a week until the funds get released (my asking for THE WHOLE AMOUNT instead of breaking it up into stages was probably a mistake).

But in case you haven’t seen the spiffy pictures (from the GRC gallery) with my wordsmithing, have a looksee–click the picture! And, ya know, maybe help me out a little bit, pretty please with a can of Red Bull, etc.?

A rockin’ great time in Cleveland

Live A1 and 8-page Special Section, April 19, 2015

Followup coverage, April 20, 2015

Jane Mitchell, Josh Crutchmer and David Kordalski, designers; Chuck Crow, Lisa Dejong, Gus Chan and Thomas Ondrey, photographers.

Every three years The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame & Museum inducts their HOF class in the city that started it all: Cleveland. It’s a big event deserving of big play.

So that’s what we did. And it rocked.

Great work by Crutchmer in developing a bold plan, and special props to The Plain Dealer’s Chuck Yarborough and John Petkovic and NEOMG’s Troy Smith for the coverage. You can find a great recap of it and links to all photo galleries here.

We previewed the 30th class in a 20-page special prior to their induction on Saturday, April 18.

Our view: The Rock Hall should have all inductions in Cleveland. It’s big here. Really big. Not so big in NY or LA, the other sites where inductions happen. Even Ringo agrees: “Finally, I’m invited and I love it! I also love that I got lucky and I also love that it’s in Cleveland,“ he said.
