I have to admit something: I am a fan of Peter Capaldi as the new Doctor. I find him to be funny, witty and a very classic version of The Doctor. However, not all Whovians like Capaldi and I think I know why.
Most people like David Tennant, Christopher Eccleston or Matt Smith. Heck, people really like John Hurt, and he was in only one episode! (But, yeah, he was pretty bad @$$.) About ten people I have met are not fans of Capaldi and have told me that he’s killing Doctor Who for them. But I figured out why. There’s a very stark difference between Capaldi and the other doctors.
Eccleston: childish in nature; hiding a deep pain by “switching” to a happy place and powering through with a smile. There was a darkness in the 9th Doctor, but he was very hopeful. He wanted more. // Tennant: more mature than the 9th Doctor, the 10th Doctor was more peace loving. He found the good in everyone and did everything in his power to be accepting, compassionate, and just good. He came off strong, daring and in charge. But he saw the good. // Smith: quarky and funny, he made being a geek and a nerd cool. He the teenage me, but with more confidance.
Capaldi: wiser and no-nonsense. He’s very much like the 1st Doctor who could cut his loses and walk away. Although he wants a companion, he knows that it’s too dangerous for the companion, and for him. He’s more of a loner while the others NEEDED someone. This is The Doctor who will pull the trigger and never look back.
Because of this, I believe that THAT is the reason why people are not fans of Capaldi. Because we all fell in love with the merciful Doctor, the hopeful Doctor, the good Doctor. Meanwhile, this new Doctor is darker, edgier, and The Doctor’s cruelty is seen more.
